You know what struck me first about Mannings Hotel? It’s actually tucked right into the heart of Truro on Lemon Street, which means you’re literally a two-minute walk from the cathedral and all those narrow shopping streets that make this city feel more like a large market town than Cornwall’s official capital. I mean, most people don’t realize Truro is tiny – you can walk across the entire center in maybe ten minutes – but that’s exactly what makes staying at Mannings so perfect.

The building itself has this lovely Georgian thing going on, all white-painted stone and sash windows, but honestly what won me over was how they’ve managed to keep that historic charm without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms are actually modern where it counts (proper showers, decent Wi-Fi, those little touches like USB charging ports), but they haven’t stripped away all the character. My room had these beautiful high ceilings and original cornicing that you just don’t get in chain hotels. The staff seem to genuinely know the area too – not just the obvious tourist spots, but things like which pub does the best Sunday roast (The Old Ale House, apparently) and where to park for free if you’re willing to walk five minutes.

What really sets this place apart though is the location for exploring Cornwall properly. Truro’s got that brilliant train line that runs right down to St. Austell and beyond, so you can actually day-trip to the Eden Project or the coast without dealing with summer traffic on the A30 – which, trust me, can be absolutely brutal in July and August. The hotel’s just far enough from the main road that you don’t get traffic noise, but close enough that you can stumble back from dinner without needing a taxi. I loved that I could grab coffee and pastries from that little bakery on King Street in the morning, then be wandering around the cathedral or poking through the vintage shops before most hotels have even finished serving breakfast. It’s got that 4-star comfort level without feeling stuffy or over-polished – sort of like staying with well-off relatives who actually have good taste. The 8.3 rating makes sense to me; it’s the kind of place that does everything well without trying too hard to impress you.

  Wonderful staff. Very helpful. Great continental breakfast. Location is perfect. Right in the middle of Truro. Handy gated car park (but beware of the seagulls!). They do provide car washing facility too (hose, bucket and sponge).

  The staff were friendly and helpful during our stay, with the hotel being clean and nicely decorated. The location was central and convenient for the reason we stayed. We had a continental breakfast included in our stay with a good selection to choose from.
