Hotel Description
So I stumbled across Magnolia Cottage completely by accident last spring – I was actually looking for somewhere to stay near Launceston that wasn’t, you know, another cookie-cutter chain hotel. This place is tucked away on Downtown Farm in St. Giles-on-the-Heath, and honestly, the address makes it sound more remote than it actually is. You’re still only about ten minutes from Launceston proper, but the moment you pull up the gravel drive, it feels like you’ve escaped into proper countryside. The cottage itself is this gorgeous stone building that’s been restored with real care – none of that fake rustic stuff you see everywhere. They’ve kept all the character (those thick walls mean it stays wonderfully cool even on hot days) but added modern touches where they actually matter.
What really got me was how quiet it is at night. I mean, proper quiet – no traffic, no late-night revelers, just the occasional sheep making conversation in the distance. The room I had overlooked the gardens, and there’s something deeply satisfying about having your morning coffee while watching the mist roll across the fields. The owners clearly know what they’re doing – check-in was smooth, parking is right there (which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling luggage), and they seem to anticipate what you need without being hovering types. The bed was one of those where you actually sleep through the night, and the bathroom had proper water pressure, which honestly makes or breaks a stay for me.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place for party people or anyone looking for nightlife. St. Giles-on-the-Heath is properly rural, and while there’s a decent pub within walking distance (The Cornish Inn, if you’re wondering), you’ll want a car if you plan to explore. But that’s exactly why it works so well. Bodmin Moor is right there if you’re into hiking, and you can get to the coast in about forty minutes if you fancy a day at the beach. I ended up staying an extra night just because leaving felt wrong – there’s something about the pace of life there that gets under your skin. The cottage manages to feel both luxurious and unpretentious, which is harder to pull off than you’d think. If you’re looking to properly unwind and don’t mind being away from the usual tourist chaos, this place delivers exactly what it promises.

We liked everything about our stay..
It was peaceful and the owner was welcoming. The dogs were lovely as the cats and the roaming chickens were sweet.
The welcome pack was brilliant and helpful.
I noticed someone commented on the road down to the cottage and to be honest if you are on farm grounds, go slow there are no issues at all. The coordinates to the cottage were spot on. You're about 20-30 mins drive from some places.
We would love to return back one day in the future. We loved everything. Thank you 😊

We had the most wonderful 2 night stay at Magnolia. Every expectation of the property from the website was exceeded. Myrrdin met us on arrival, he had prior to us arriving been available on email and phone to assist with all our requests including re-configuring the bedroom to fit our needs. The accommodation is perfect: exceptionally clean and comfortable ( thank you for the welcome package) with every gadget needed. The beds are fantastic, great night sleep had by all. The bathrooms are spotless with great showers – nice touch with the complimentary toiletries. We really had the most perfect stay.
