You know what caught me off guard about the Lugger? I’d driven down to Portloe expecting just another pretty Cornish fishing village – and honestly, the approach through those narrow lanes had me wondering if I’d made a mistake. But then you round that final bend and there’s this perfectly positioned hotel, literally perched on the harbor’s edge like it’s been part of the scenery for centuries.

The thing about Portloe is that it’s properly tucked away – I mean, you’re not stumbling across this place by accident. It’s one of those villages where you park at the top (there’s a decent-sized car park, thank god, because trying to reverse back up those lanes would be a nightmare) and walk down to the water. The Lugger sits right there at the bottom, and I actually love that they call themselves “A Bespoke Hotel” because it’s not pretentious – it just fits. The rooms feel thoughtfully done rather than cookie-cutter fancy, if that makes sense. Mine overlooked the tiny harbor, and honestly, watching the boats bob around while having my morning coffee became this whole ritual. The sound of the water is constant but not intrusive – more like white noise that actually helps you sleep.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area rather than just reciting tourist information. When I mentioned wanting to walk the coast path, the guy at reception didn’t just point east or west – he actually described which direction would give me the best light for photos at that time of day, and warned me about a particularly muddy stretch after recent rain. The restaurant takes full advantage of being right on the water, obviously, and while the menu isn’t huge, everything I tried felt like they’d actually thought about it rather than just ordering from some generic supplier. I will say the dining room gets pretty busy during dinner service, especially in summer – not necessarily a bad thing, but worth knowing if you’re hoping for a quiet romantic meal. The bar area is where I ended up most evenings, partly because the locals actually drink there too, which always feels like a good sign. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from some spectacular coastal scenery, and the South West Coast Path runs right past the village, but you’re also far enough from the main tourist trail that it never feels overrun. Even in peak season, Portloe maintains this almost secret feeling – like you’ve found something most people miss.

  Amazing location. Fabulous staff. Breakfast was brilliant, freshly cooked to order and cooked well. Staff made it such an enjoyable stay.

  Views from the room and breakfast room were great.

  Car park spaces are small and the entry ramp is steep which is tricky if you have a low car!
