Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places around Bodmin, but Lower Hill Cottage actually surprised me – and that’s saying something since I’m pretty picky about where I put my head down. You know what got me first? The silence. I mean, you’re basically tucked into this little pocket of Cornwall where the loudest thing you’ll hear is probably sheep having opinions about something.

The cottage itself has that proper Cornish character without feeling like someone’s trying too hard to be “quaint.” Stone walls that actually keep the place cool in summer (learned that the hard way at other places), and honestly, the Swedish hot tub is the real deal. Not some inflatable thing they’ve plonked in the garden – this is built for the long haul. I spent way too much time in there on my second night, watching the stars come out. The water stays properly hot, and there’s something pretty magical about soaking outside when it’s crisp but you’re warm as toast. Fair warning though – you’ll probably lose track of time completely.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve got the practical stuff sorted without making a fuss about it. Parking’s right there (which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling bags), the WiFi actually works if you need it, and the heating responds quickly when evening rolls around. The kitchen’s got everything you need if you pick up supplies from the Bodmin Co-op – though honestly, after a day exploring the moor or poking around Lanhydrock, I mostly just wanted to collapse with a pint and some takeaway. The cottage sits in Lower Hill, which locals know but tourists often miss – it’s one of those spots where you feel like you’ve found something special without being completely cut off from civilization. You’re close enough to nip into Bodmin proper when you need supplies, but far enough out that you remember why you came to Cornwall in the future. The 9.1 rating makes sense once you’ve been there – it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it delivers exactly what you want from a proper countryside escape. Plus that hot tub… well, let’s just say I’m already planning my next visit.

  Location and well equipped.
  
  What could be improved: Little bit of maintenance on one of the showers was needed. No reception at all for phone networks. Access road is not for the faint hearted.

  Lovely property and hot tub. Responsive host.
  
  What could be improved: WiFi router broken on arrival, was dealt with promptly but left us without internet/telephone (due to lack of service within the area) for the first two days of our stay. Host very responsive and helpful though. A bit of a worry for me as was trying to be in contact with my son who was at a local festival.
  Garden – lovely setting but very open so not overly secure for an inquisitive 11 month old spaniel!!
