Hotel Description
You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of waterfront hotels, but Lower Deck in Fowey actually gets it right. The moment you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that someone who understands hospitality designed this place – not some corporate committee. It’s tucked right into the heart of Fowey’s medieval streets (good luck finding it the first time, honestly – the narrow lanes can be a maze), but once you’re there, you realize the slightly tricky location is actually perfect. You’re literally steps from the harbor, and I mean steps – you can hear the gentle lapping of water and the occasional creak of moored boats from most rooms. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which makes such a difference. When I asked about the best spot to catch the Bodinnick ferry, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward the quay – he told me exactly which corner gives you the clearest view of when it’s coming back across the river.
The rooms have this lovely balance between being properly comfortable and not trying too hard to be fancy. Mine faced the estuary, and honestly, watching the tide change the whole character of the river throughout the day was better entertainment than any TV. The beds are actually good – you know how hotel beds can be weirdly firm or surprisingly saggy? These hit that sweet spot. What really impressed me was the attention to sound insulation, because Fowey can get lively during regatta season or summer weekends, but inside it stays peaceful. The bathrooms are modern without being stark, and there’s proper water pressure, which isn’t always a given in these older Cornish buildings. Parking can be a bit of an adventure since you’re dealing with streets that were definitely not designed for cars, but they’ve sorted out arrangements that work – just follow their instructions exactly and don’t try to improvise.
I mean, a 9.3 rating sounds almost too good to be true, but after staying there I get it. It’s not perfect – the WiFi gets a bit patchy during busy periods, and if you’re expecting a big hotel lobby scene, this isn’t that kind of place. But Lower Deck understands what people actually want when they come to Fowey. You want to feel connected to this beautiful working harbor town, not isolated from it in some generic hotel bubble. The location puts you right in the mix of everything – you can walk to Readymoney Cove in about ten minutes, the town’s best pubs are practically next door, and if you’re into the whole Daphne du Maurier thing, you’re surrounded by spots she wrote about. Plus, and this matters more than you’d think, they serve a proper breakfast that doesn’t feel rushed. You can sit there planning your day while watching the river traffic wake up, which is exactly how mornings should start when you’re somewhere this special.

The location and cleanliness was great, the balcony terrace overlooking the estuary was amazing albeit overlooked by upper apartment.
What could be improved: This had been mentioned in a previous message we noticed, the upper floor bedroom floorboards are very squeaky and woke us up every morning by the dwellers above at about 6am, I suggest the owners address this as a matter of urgency, wasn’t happy!Scott from United Kingdom – 9 September 2023 (10/10)
Amazing location, huge decked area overlooking the estuary. Square Rig is close to the town centre and also to Caffa Mill carpark.
What could be improved: Our only slight issue was the noise from the people above across the very creaky floor and the scraping of their chairs across their balcony.
