Hotel Description
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Cornwall, but Lower Barns Guest House honestly caught me off guard in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in this tiny hamlet called Bosue – and I mean tiny, like blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tiny – between St. Austell and Mevagissey. The first time I drove there, I actually passed the turn twice because it’s so well hidden down these narrow country lanes. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? Once you find it, you feel like you’ve discovered this perfect little secret that most tourists completely bypass on their way to the busier coastal spots.
The place itself is this beautifully converted barn that the owners have transformed without losing any of its original character. I mean, you can still see the old stone walls and wooden beams, but everything feels fresh and thoughtfully done. My room had this gorgeous view over the surrounding countryside – proper rolling hills and hedgerows, not the sanitized version you see in brochures. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night. No traffic noise, no drunk tourists stumbling back from pubs (because there literally aren’t any nearby), just the occasional owl or rustle of wind through the trees. The beds are actually comfortable too, which honestly can’t be said for every charming countryside place I’ve stayed at.
The location works brilliantly if you want to explore both inland Cornwall and the coast without feeling rushed. Mevagissey is maybe ten minutes down winding roads – perfect for grabbing fish and chips or poking around the harbor. The Eden Project is close enough for an easy day trip, and you’re well-positioned for hitting the coastal path without dealing with St. Austell’s traffic every time you want to go somewhere. I particularly loved that I could walk right from the guest house into proper countryside – there’s this footpath that leads through fields where sheep give you that classic suspicious stare. Parking is dead easy too, which anyone who’s tried to park in Mevagissey during summer will appreciate. The owners clearly know the area inside and out, and they’re the type who’ll give you actual useful recommendations rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward hovering around a tiny reception desk you get at some places.

The setting and rooms are absolutely first class. The welcome from Janie and Mike could not be better, they understand "hospitality". Breakfast excellent, toffees and fruit cake in room are great touches. Comfy bed and cleanliness is excellent.
