Hotel Description

You know what? When I first pulled up to Lower Axford Cottage in Callington, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the name sounds sort of quaint and basic, right? But honestly, this place completely knocked my socks off. It’s tucked away in this peaceful spot that feels like you’ve stumbled onto someone’s well-kept secret, and the moment you step inside, you realize why it’s earned that perfect 10 rating.

The cottage itself has this gorgeous stone exterior that’s clearly been lovingly maintained, and inside it strikes this perfect balance between proper Cornish character and actually comfortable modern living. I mean, you’ve got these lovely exposed beams and original features that make you feel like you’re staying somewhere with real history, but then there’s proper heating, a fantastic kitchen that actually works (you’d be surprised how rare that is in some cottages), and a bathroom that doesn’t make you feel like you’re roughing it. The beds are genuinely comfortable too – none of that saggy mattress nonsense you sometimes get in period properties. What really got me was the attention to detail… there were fresh flowers when I arrived, the pantry was stocked with local treats, and someone had clearly thought about what actual guests would need, down to having decent coffee and proper milk in the fridge.

Callington itself is one of those proper Cornish market towns that tourists often miss because they’re rushing off to the coast, but honestly, that’s their loss. You’re perfectly positioned here – close enough to Bodmin Moor for some spectacular walks (the views from Kit Hill are absolutely worth the climb), but also an easy drive to both Plymouth if you need city amenities and the south coast beaches when the weather’s decent. The local pub, The Bull’s Head, does a cracking Sunday roast, and there’s a brilliant little bakery on Fore Street that locals queue up at on Saturday mornings. Parking at the cottage is actually straightforward too, which is more than I can say for a lot of places around here. The only tiny thing I’d mention is that if you’re not used to country quiet, the silence at night is almost startling – no traffic noise, just the occasional owl. Some people love that (I certainly did), but if you’re a city person who needs white noise to sleep, maybe pack some earplugs just in case.
