Hotel Description
You know what’s funny about Loe Bar Top? The name makes it sound like some clifftop gastropub, but it’s actually this brilliant little hotel tucked right on Loe Bar Road in Porthleven – and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you tried. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Porthleven’s harbor, where you can watch the waves crash over the harbor wall (especially dramatic during winter storms, if that’s your thing). The whole setup feels quintessentially Cornish without trying too hard, which is refreshing when so many places lean into the whole “authentic fishing village” angle a bit too heavily.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed the details that actually matter. The rooms – well, they’re proper comfortable without being fussy, and you can tell someone thought about what travelers really need. Decent shower pressure (thank god), blackout curtains that actually work, and windows that open properly so you can hear the sea without freezing to death. Parking’s sorted too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Porthleven’s narrow streets in summer will appreciate. The staff seem to genuinely know the area – not just the obvious tourist spots, but they’ll point you toward the bakery that locals queue at or tell you the best time to catch the tide pools near Loe Bar itself. Speaking of which, the actual Loe Bar beach is maybe a fifteen-minute walk through some gorgeous coastal path, and it’s one of those places that feels completely wild even when it’s busy.
The thing that strikes me most is how the hotel sits in this sweet spot between feeling like a proper retreat and being right in the thick of things. Porthleven’s got this fantastic food scene now – Kota’s just down the road if you want to splash out, or there’s brilliant fish and chips at The Ship Inn – but when you come back to Loe Bar Top, it’s quiet enough that you’re not dealing with late-night revelers stumbling past your window. The whole vibe is sort of… grown-up seaside holiday, I suppose? Like, you could bring kids and they’d love exploring the rock pools, but it’s equally perfect for a romantic weekend where you want to drink wine and watch sunsets without anyone playing terrible music on a bluetooth speaker. That 9.4 rating honestly makes sense when you stay here – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Cornwall, but everything works exactly as it should, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

The arrival process was very easy. Paul, the owner contacted me through email then I contacted him by phone on arrival. Parking could have been a pain as Porthleven is not built for cars but the property has parking spaces close by in a large easy to use car park, which made everything easy. Paul helpfully let us into the flat and showed us around.
The flat is just as it looks in the pictures, a nice living/kitchen area, double room and single room and nice bathroom with a shower. The views are fantastic, out over the sea, ranging from Lizard on the left to Penzance ish on the right. On a nice day you get a beautiful blue sea, on a stormy one you get great crashing waves. Win win!
It's an easy and scenic walk into town and the opposite way joins the coastal path along the very long beach. Porthleven is great, much more upmarket than when I used to visit in my youth, but nice all the same.Lyn from United Kingdom – 5 February 2025 (10/10)
We had a lovely long weekend at Loe Bar Top. The flat was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Great to have parking included as sometimes it can be a bit tricky finding a space in Porthleven. We enjoyed being so close to the harbour and the variety of shops, bars and restaurants/cafes. Thank you Paul for meeting us in the car park and helping us in with our bags, it was appreciated.
What could be improved: Nothing – The flat was perfect for our four night break.
