Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about King Arthur’s Arms? I was expecting some cheesy tourist trap cashing in on the whole Arthurian legend thing, but honestly, this place has more character than most hotels twice its price. Right there on Fore Street – and I mean literally steps from where you can peer over the cliffs at Tintagel Castle ruins – it’s got this perfect balance of being convenient without feeling like you’re sleeping in a gift shop.

The building itself has that weathered Cornish stone look that actually means something here, not like those fake-aged places you see everywhere. Walking in, there’s this warm, slightly smoky smell (good smoky, like a proper fireplace, not cigarettes) mixed with something that might be traditional Sunday roast drifting from their restaurant. The staff actually seem to know the area – I mean really know it, not just the rehearsed spiel about King Arthur. When I mentioned wanting to catch the sunrise over the castle, the woman at reception told me exactly which path to take and warned me about the wind (she was absolutely right about that wind, by the way).

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed the whole location thing. Yes, you’re going to hear some tourist chatter during the day – Fore Street gets busy, especially in summer – but by evening it settles into this lovely quiet rhythm where you can actually hear the sea. The rooms are properly soundproofed too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re this close to the main drag. Parking was easier than expected; there’s a small lot behind the building, though you’ll want to get that sorted when you check in rather than driving around looking for it like I did. The whole check-in process was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly formal hotel dance, just friendly people who seemed genuinely pleased you’d chosen to stay.

Here’s the thing though – and this is why that 8.7 rating makes sense – everything just works properly. The shower pressure is excellent (crucial after climbing around castle ruins all day), the beds are actually comfortable, and the breakfast… well, let’s just say they understand that if you’re staying in Cornwall, you want proper Cornish ingredients, not some generic continental buffet. I ended up extending my stay an extra night, partly because I wasn’t ready to leave the area, but honestly, partly because the hotel itself had become part of the experience rather than just a place to crash. It’s the kind of spot where you can walk to the castle ruins in five minutes, grab supplies from the village shops, then come back and feel like you’re staying somewhere with genuine local roots rather than some corporate chain that happens to have a Cornish postcode.
