Hotel Description
So here’s the thing about Jopes Mill and Lodge – it’s one of those places that completely catches you off guard in the best possible way. I mean, you’re driving through what feels like proper countryside between Looe and the moors, and suddenly there’s this beautifully converted mill sitting right there by the water. The building itself has that perfect mix of old stone character and modern comfort that’s actually hard to find (so many places get this balance completely wrong).
What really got me was how quiet it is, especially at night. You know that proper countryside quiet where you can actually hear the water from the old mill workings? It’s honestly brilliant if you’re coming from London or any big city – your nervous system just sort of exhales. The rooms are genuinely lovely too, not just Instagram-pretty but actually comfortable with proper beds and those little touches that show someone’s paying attention. The staff clearly know what they’re doing; check-in was smooth and they had solid recommendations for dinner spots in Looe (which is only about ten minutes down the road, by the way).
Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I went: parking is easy and free, which is honestly a relief after dealing with Looe’s summer crowds. The location is actually perfect if you want to explore both the coast and Bodmin Moor – you’re sort of positioned between both without being stuck in either. Looe gets absolutely mental during peak season, but staying at Jopes Mill means you can pop down for dinner or a beach walk then retreat back to actual peace and quiet. I did notice it can get a bit chilly in the evenings even in summer (typical Cornwall really), but the heating in the rooms is spot-on. The breakfast was properly good too – not just continental nonsense but actual cooked options with local ingredients. You can tell they’re not cutting corners. Honestly, with a 9.6 rating, I was expecting it to be good, but this place actually delivers on the hype, which doesn’t always happen with highly-rated spots. If you’re doing Cornwall and want somewhere that feels special without being pretentious, this is your place.

Primarily the location, it was absolutely stunning. We stayed in the lodge and were able to sit on the terrace under the roof listening to the stream and watching the wildlife.

Lovely place. So comfortable. Very well equipped. Beautiful setting. Warm and cosy. The addition of the log burner was great for a winter stay. Lovely hosts, very kind and approachable. There was a bad storm which caused a power cut and they were very attentive in making sure we had what we needed and that everything was OK. Would highly recommend as a place to stay in Cornwall that isn't the typical beach type place that holiday makers would choose. It's in a lovely quiet and secluded setting that is very accessible with amenities very near by. The converted mill is beautiful and the hosts have done a brilliant job of renovating it. You can tell that they really care about what they do.
