Hotel Description

You know what? I walked past Ivy Cottage probably a dozen times before I realized it was actually a hotel. Tucked right there on King Street in the heart of Lostwithiel, it looks more like someone’s beautifully kept period home than your typical accommodation – which, honestly, is exactly what makes it so special. The building has this lovely Cornish character that you just can’t fake, and when you’re standing outside, you can hear the River Fowey flowing just behind the main street. It’s one of those places where you immediately think “okay, this feels right.”

The location is pretty much perfect if you want to explore this part of Cornwall without feeling like you’re staying in some soulless chain place. Lostwithiel itself is this charming medieval town that most people just drive through on their way to the Eden Project or the coast, but actually staying here means you get the whole place to yourself once the day-trippers head home. You can walk to the old bridge over the Fowey in about two minutes, and there’s something really lovely about having your morning coffee while watching the river flow by. The antique shops and cafes along the main street are all within easy reach – I mean, everything’s within easy reach when the whole town center is basically three streets. What surprised me was how quiet it gets in the evenings, despite being right on the main drag. The old stone walls must be doing their job because I barely heard any traffic.

The cottage itself has that perfect balance of historical charm and modern comfort that’s actually pretty hard to pull off. The rooms have character – real character, not the fake stuff you get in newer places trying too hard to look old. Think exposed beams and period features, but with properly functioning heating and good wifi (which, let’s be honest, matters). The 9.3 rating makes total sense once you’re there; it’s the kind of place where someone’s clearly paying attention to details. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and parking… well, this is a medieval town center, so don’t expect a massive car park, but there are options nearby. The owners seem to know the area really well – they pointed me toward some walking routes along the river that I never would have found otherwise. If you’re planning to use this as a base for exploring Cornwall, you’re about twenty minutes from the Eden Project, half an hour from some decent beaches, and perfectly positioned for day trips without having to deal with the summer crowds that swamp places like St. Ives or Padstow. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’ve discovered something special rather than just booked another hotel room.

    The cottage was cosy and warm and has been well cared for. The bed was fabulous and the bottle of prosecco was a lovely touch. The included cream tea from the Royal Oak was very kindly switched for takeaway chocolate fudge cake. We'll definitely be looking to return.

    The location was perfect for our visit. Parking could have been an issue, but the host had a local arrangement with the adjacent pub regarding parking. The accommodation was very clean and well furnished.

    Pleasant town, central for exploring this part of Cornwall. Food at Royal Oak pub next door was very good and their staff friendly and helpful, particularly Leanne.

    What could be improved: Parking outside cottage was not possible but staff at pub next door made sure we were given a spot in their car park.
