Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hygga? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it really does have that Danish hygge feeling, all cozy and welcoming in a way that doesn’t feel forced. It’s tucked away on Lankelly Lane in Fowey, which honestly is perfect because you’re close enough to wander down to the harbor in about five minutes, but far enough up the hill that you escape the summer crowds and those seagulls that get a bit too friendly around the waterfront cafes.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. Fowey’s one of those Cornish towns that can feel absolutely packed during peak season – I mean, the narrow streets weren’t exactly designed for modern tourism – but staying at Hygga means you can duck out of the madness whenever you need to breathe. The walk down to the town center is lovely, though I’ll warn you the walk back up is a bit of a workout, especially after you’ve sampled the local ales at the Ship Inn. Parking can be tricky in Fowey proper, so having a place to leave your car up on Lankelly Lane is honestly a godsend. The staff seem to really know their stuff too – they pointed me toward the best spot to catch the Bodinnick ferry (saves you the long drive around the estuary) and mentioned which days the local markets run, little details that make a difference.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel genuinely boutique without being pretentious about it. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in elegance – proper thick curtains that actually block out the light, beds that don’t feel like they came from a catalog, and those little touches like decent coffee facilities that show someone’s actually thought about what travelers need. You can hear the occasional car on the lane, but it’s not a busy road, and honestly the sound of the river down in the valley is much more noticeable, especially at night when everything else goes quiet. The whole place has this calm, unhurried atmosphere that makes you want to actually slow down rather than tick off tourist attractions. I found myself sitting in their little garden area much longer than planned, just watching the light change over the rooftops below. That 9.9 rating isn’t just numbers – you can feel why people keep coming back here. It’s the sort of place that makes you understand why people get so attached to particular corners of Cornwall, where the hospitality feels genuine and you’re not just another booking in the system.

The property was perfect and the hosts were lovely.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

The property was perfect for our short stay. Very cosy, well kitted out and immaculately clean. The owners were very helpful and friendly.

What could be improved: It is a slightly awkward walk into and back from the centre of Fowey although the owner (Jackie) did advise us of an alternative easier route that we could take next time.

  • Fiona from United Kingdom – 1 June 2025 (10/10)

Such a beautiful well thought out space. It has everything you need and more! Absolutely spotless and can I just say, the towels, bedding smelt amazing. I was only there for one night as i had an early morning in Fowey the next day. I can whole heartedly recommend this property and if I ever work in Fowey again I’d definitely contact them to stay again.

We had a wonderful stay at Hygga. The care and attention to detail is unparalleled! It was spotlessly clean, and really comfortable. Jackie and Bob are great hosts – excellent communication and there if you need them. Everything worked perfectly. The garden was delightful, filled with birdsong and sunlight ( we were very lucky with the weather). We loved the walk into Fowey through the woods. We ate at Sam’s one night, one of Jackie’s recommendations, and very good, but do book in advance, people were getting turned away. And we cooked at Hygga the other nights, and the kitchen is well equipped and easy to use. There’s even a small dishwasher. It was great that oil, salt pepper, coffee tea and milk were all provided. We will definitely be back!

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Danielle from United Kingdom – 8 April 2025 (10/10)

The location was perfect and Jackie and Bob were wonderful hosts who very kindly collected us from the nearest train station as we travelled by train. It was a very peaceful place to stay and a short walk to Fowey with easy access to the SWCP. Our highlight was the view of the sunrise over the garden whilst we had our morning cup of tea.
