Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Horseshoe Cottage? It’s actually tucked away in Morval – not right in Looe itself – which honestly turned out to be perfect. I mean, you’re still only a few minutes from all the harbor action and those narrow streets packed with tourists buying pasties, but you get to escape back to this quiet little village when you’ve had enough of the crowds.
The cottage itself has that proper Cornish character you’re hoping for without feeling like someone’s trying too hard to be quaint. The stone walls are thick enough that you won’t hear much from outside (trust me, this matters during school holidays when Looe gets absolutely mental), and there’s something really satisfying about the heavy wooden doors and those small windows that frame the countryside views perfectly. Parking’s right there too – no stress about finding a spot or hauling your luggage down some impossibly steep Cornish lane. The whole setup just works, you know? Inside, they’ve managed to keep the old-world charm while actually making it comfortable. The beds are properly good, not those saggy things you sometimes get in “character” places, and the heating works brilliantly (because let’s be real, Cornwall can be bloody freezing even in summer evenings).
What really sells this place though is the location for exploring. You’re positioned perfectly between the Looe valley walks and the coast path – I’d wake up each morning genuinely torn between heading down to Looe for a proper Cornish breakfast and those dramatic harbor views, or taking the car ten minutes to some of the more secluded coves near Polperro. The cottage sits in this sweet spot where you can actually walk to the Looe Valley Line railway if you’re feeling ambitious, but you’re also close enough to drive to places like the Eden Project or Fowey without it being a whole day’s expedition. Honestly, after staying in cramped Looe B&Bs before where you’re listening to seagulls screaming at 5am and trying to navigate the summer traffic just to get out of town, having this peaceful base in Morval felt like I’d cracked some sort of code. The 9.3 rating makes total sense – it’s one of those places that just gets the basics absolutely right while giving you that authentic Cornwall experience without the tourist trap feeling.
