Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hollyhocks on Rock Road – I mean, Saint Minver isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when you think Cornwall getaway. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are tucked away in these quiet coastal villages, and this place is definitely one of them.

The thing about Hollyhocks is that it gets the balance just right. It’s got that proper 4-star polish without feeling stuffy or trying too hard to impress. The rooms are actually spacious (not like those cramped seaside places where you can barely open your suitcase), and there’s this lovely attention to detail that makes you feel like someone genuinely cares about your stay. The beds are properly comfortable too – I’m talking the kind where you actually sleep through the night instead of tossing around on some rock-hard mattress. What really sold me though was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the main tourist drag that you don’t have people stumbling past your window at all hours, but close enough to Padstow that you can easily pop over for dinner without it being a whole production.

The staff here actually know the area, which is rarer than you’d think. They pointed me toward this brilliant little coastal walk that starts practically from the hotel’s doorstep – leads down toward the Camel Estuary and honestly, on a clear morning it’s absolutely stunning. You won’t find that path mentioned in most guidebooks, but locals use it all the time. Parking is straightforward too (there’s proper space, not some nightmare squeeze between stone walls), and check-in was refreshingly efficient. The breakfast is solid – nothing fancy, but they do a proper full English and the coffee’s actually decent. I stayed in early September when things were quieting down from the summer rush, and it felt like having this little corner of Cornwall pretty much to yourself. The 8.5 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place on the coast, but everything just works the way it should. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels authentically Cornish without the tourist circus, and you want to be close enough to explore both the coast and those gorgeous inland villages, Hollyhocks hits that sweet spot perfectly.

  Location is superb. Within walking distance of local shops, good pub and Rock beach. Very spacious. Good sized, secure garden for our dogs. We’ll equipped. Very clean.
  
  What could be improved: Only minor niggle was toilet flush in main bathroom needs fixing. Not a major problem for us as the en-suite was fine but could be an issue if more people staying.

  Wendy was very accomodating of our group & responded very quickly to any messages, excellent location, 100 yards from the Pityme Inn, 20 mins walk from Rock, plenty of little shops in the village and wood supplied for the fire. Terrific break, Thanks Wendy!

  Very good size bedrooms – good bathrooms and kitchen. Very clean. Good location for Rock, Polzeath and Daymer and the local stores.

  Location for us, near family. Great cottage with all you could wish for. Owners are fantastic, helped us when we foolishly locked ourselves out. I would certainly book again.

  Exceptionally Clean, Every needs it catered specially we are with children and they found lots of board games to play., Bed's are very comfy. The kitchen had all the utensils you want. Off road parking. The area is very quiet at night.

  What could be improved: The main bathroom toilet didn't flush properly, sometimes we had to not flush it. It wasn't ideal taking our own towels as we then had wet towels in the car all day on the day we left
