Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Hoblyns Cove? I mean, I’d driven past Holywell Bay countless times on the way to Newquay, but I never really paid attention to this little gem tucked away from the main coastal road. The moment you pull into their car park – which, honestly, is way more spacious than you’d expect for a Cornwall coastal spot – you get this sense that someone actually thought about the guest experience here. The building itself has that weathered Cornish stone look that doesn’t try too hard to be quaint, if you know what I mean. It just sits there naturally, like it’s been watching over Holywell Bay for decades.

What really sold me was stepping onto their terrace area around sunset. I’m not usually one for gushing about views, but the way the light hits those sand dunes stretching toward the beach… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you understand why people move to Cornwall and never leave. The rooms themselves are actually thoughtfully designed – none of that fake nautical nonsense you get at some seaside places. Clean lines, proper blackout curtains (crucial if you’re like me and the seagulls wake you at dawn), and bathrooms that feel genuinely luxurious without being pretentious. The staff seem to know the area inside and out too. When I mentioned wanting to avoid the Newquay crowds, the woman at reception immediately suggested the coastal path toward Penhale – apparently there’s this section most tourists miss where you can watch the surfers at Perran Sands without fighting for a parking spot.

Here’s the thing about Hoblyns Cove that sets it apart from other 4-star places along this stretch – it feels like the owners actually stay here themselves. The WiFi works properly (not always a given in rural Cornwall), there’s proper soundproofing between rooms, and they’ve got this little library area with actual good books, not just leftover paperbacks from 1987. The breakfast situation is solid without being overwhelming – local suppliers, decent coffee, and they don’t make you feel rushed even during busy periods. I visited in late September, which is honestly the sweet spot for this area anyway. Summer crowds have thinned out, but the weather’s still decent and the sea’s actually warmer than it is in June. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the mobile signal can be a bit patchy in some rooms – though that might be a feature, not a bug, depending on what you’re after. For the money, especially considering that 9.5 rating isn’t just travel website fluff, you’re getting genuine quality in one of Cornwall’s more peaceful corners.
