Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hazel Barn? It’s actually in this quiet residential pocket of Falmouth that most tourists never stumble across – tucked away where Kimberley Park Road meets the older part of town. I mean, you’re still only a ten-minute walk from the harbor and all that bustling waterfront activity, but here it feels like you’ve found this little secret that the guidebooks somehow missed.

The building itself has this lovely converted character – honestly, you can tell someone put real thought into keeping the original charm while making it properly comfortable. The rooms have these thick stone walls that keep everything beautifully cool in summer (and trust me, Falmouth can get surprisingly warm when the sun’s out), plus they do this brilliant job of blocking out street noise. Not that there’s much – this area goes pretty quiet after the dinner crowd heads home. What I really appreciated was the attention to small details… like, the lighting actually works for reading in bed, and there’s proper space to unpack your stuff instead of living out of a suitcase. The shower pressure is honestly better than most places twice the price.

But here’s what makes it special – the location puts you right in the sweet spot for exploring Falmouth properly. You can walk down to the Maritime Museum and the waterfront without dealing with the parking nightmare near the harbor (seriously, don’t even attempt driving down there in summer). Plus you’re close enough to pop back for an afternoon rest, which I ended up doing more than once after tramping around the coastal paths. The staff seem to actually know the area too – they pointed me toward this fantastic little seafood place on Arwenack Street that I never would’ve found otherwise. One small thing though – if you’re planning to arrive late, definitely give them a heads up about check-in timing. It’s not a massive hotel operation, so they appreciate the courtesy. Overall, it’s got that 9.2 rating for good reason – it’s the kind of place that gets the fundamentals right while still feeling like somewhere special you’d want to tell people about.

Great location – evenly situated between Swanpool (15 min walk) and Maenporth (20 min walk) beaches in a lovely little complex of similar properties.

Whole place is in brilliant condition and was lovely and clean on arrival. Kitchen had everything you could need, plenty of hot water on demand. Overall the house felt homely – beds were comfy as was the sofa and it really felt like time could slip away a bit.

As the lounge/kitchen/dining area is fairly small, it had the great effect of bringing us closer together in the evenings and not having kids etc in different rooms – this was probably my favourite part!

As for the pet friendly bit – bowls and toys for the dog made a lovely welcoming difference!

I honestly couldn't recommend Hazel Barn enough (and have already done so) – this is a place I have no doubt to which we will return.

What could be improved: To address the (completely minor) points that others have made:

Garden – would be really easy to put a small gate by the wall leading up to the entrance – that would give a perfect little free run area for a dog as it's definitely pet friendly.

Blinds – The ceiling blinds could do with a bit of attention. Not an issue for us in the slightest as mornings/nights are dark but could understand could be more awkward in summer months. The poles were there but think the blinds themselves have been a bit badly treated over the course of many rentals, as to be expected

WiFi – I've seen a few reviews complaining about this. Yep, the WiFi is poor (tested at an enormous 1.8MBPS) but you know what? You're on holiday. We managed quite easily to browse Google and social, and even watch the GP on Sky and a few Netflix films – yeah it wasn't great quality viewing but totally didn't matter. Whenever the signal got a bit rubbish, we just got a pack of cards out or talked to each other or went for a walk, like in the old days. If high speed internet is a requirement for a family holiday then this isn't the place for you – but to be quite honest if that's what your holiday needs then Cornwall probably isn't the place for you either.

The barn was nice, kitchen, sitting area and dining room all in one was cosy!! Very quiet, had everything you needed. Bedrooms both good sizes. Bathroom was a good size and instant hot water for washing. Very close to the beach with a nice costal path walk.

What could be improved: Car space was tight as a wall on one side and neighbours car tight if in already. Key Code was wrong to actual emailed. So had to call in pouring rain and area signal was bad for phones. Not enough loo paper. Was rejected a late check out on the basis cleaners were going to be there 10 am sharp, no one arrived by 10.15 when left. blinds didn’t open in bedrooms and one in the twin did not close so not very dark at night.
