Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Harbour Retreat Padstow? Walking up Duke Street – and I mean, it’s literally right in the thick of things – you get this immediate sense that you’re staying somewhere that actually matters to the town’s story. The building itself has that proper Cornish character, the kind where you can almost feel the maritime history in the stone walls, but honestly, it’s been done up so thoughtfully that you’re not sacrificing any modern comfort for the charm.

The apartment is genuinely spacious, which surprised me because let’s face it, most places in these old harbor towns are basically converted fishermen’s cottages where you’re bumping your head on beams every five minutes. Not here though – there’s actually room to spread out, and the windows frame the harbor activity perfectly. I spent way too much time just watching the boats come and go, especially in the early morning when the fishing vessels head out and everything’s still quiet except for the gulls. The kitchen’s properly equipped too, which matters because while Padstow’s restaurant scene is incredible (Rick Stein’s empire is everywhere, obviously), sometimes you just want to grab some local crab from the harbor and cook it yourself. Pro tip – the little fishmonger near the harbor square usually has the best catch, and they’ll sort you out with cooking advice if you ask nicely.

What really makes this place work is the location without the chaos, if that makes sense. You’re right in the old town, maybe a two-minute walk to the harbor front and all the restaurants, but Duke Street doesn’t get the full brunt of the summer tourist stampede. I was there during the May Day festival – absolutely mental crowds – but the apartment felt like a proper retreat when things got overwhelming. Parking can be tricky (it’s Cornwall, what do you expect?), but there’s a decent public car park about five minutes away, and honestly, once you’re settled, you won’t need the car much. Everything worth doing is either walkable or a short boat ride away. The Camel Trail starts practically on your doorstep if you’re into cycling, and the ferry to Rock runs regularly if you fancy a change of scene. The only minor thing I’d mention is that weekend nights can get a bit lively with people heading between the pubs, but it dies down pretty quickly, and frankly, it’s all part of the authentic harbor town experience. This isn’t some sanitized holiday village – it’s the real Padstow, just with a very comfortable base to experience it from.

Reviews

  • Huachao from United Kingdom – 4 June 2025 (8/10)

Good location, with plenty of board games for children

What could be improved: Didn’t have shampoo and body wash supply. Location is good, however it is behind a restaurant, and front door is in the middle of another hotel’s rubbish bin area. Smell not good.

  • Anthony from United States – 31 May 2025 (8/10)

The apartment was large, modern, and spacious. Excellent location close to harbor.

What could be improved: It was difficult, even hazardous, to drag heavy suitcases up and down the steep flight of 19 stairs from street level. This should have been noted on the description, and I would not have booked this place The toiletries consisted of two half-empty bottles of hand wash. There was half a roll of paper towels and three pods for the washing machine. I have rented cheaper places which were better stocked, and more welcoming. The owners live in central England and obviously do not keep a close watch over their property.

  • Peter from United Kingdom – 31 May 2025 (10/10)

The property is tucked away but the host called and let us know where to find the key and how to access the property including the drop off area for luggage. All went smoothly and the property was fantastic.

What could be improved: I honestly cannot think of anything that would make the accommodation better, it was excellent all round.

  • Woolcock from Australia – 17 May 2025 (10/10)

The property was excellent, in an excellent location in an excellent town. I wrote, "An oasis in the midst of travel."

What could be improved: I leave this blank.

  • Tracey from United Kingdom – 3 May 2025 (10/10)

Lovely comfortable, clean and well equipped apartment in a fabulous location.
Host was very friendly and helpful

  • Gareth from United Kingdom – 12 April 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Would have been nice to have a welcome pack… some biscuits bottle of wine that sort of thing like maybe places do now, at least a small milk.

  • Oliver from United Kingdom – 6 April 2025 (10/10)

    Clean, modern and comfortable

  • Paula from United Kingdom – 8 March 2025 (10/10)

The apartment is just round the corner from the harbour.

It is beautifully decorated in seaside colours – sand, white and blue and was really spacious, relaxing and clean. Totally in keeping with the location.

Kitchen is well equipped including space to eat at a table. Also has a dishwasher and washing machine.

Living room sofas are very comfy and provided a great area to relax in.

Bed very comfy also. And bedding beautifully clean. Bedroom has plenty of space for clothes.

All in all a great place to stay for a solo traveller, couple or family.

What could be improved: No problem for me, but need to be aware of flight of stairs inside – 19 steps – up to the apartment from the front door

  • Josie from United Kingdom – 23 February 2025 (8/10)

Lovely decor, great location, clean and had everything you would need

What could be improved: Bit of noise from the bar below, but not late, so not a big deal, if didn’t have small kid, would have gone down for a drink and enjoy the live music.

  • Larkhall from United Kingdom – 27 January 2025 (8/10)

Great central location for a winter (January) visit. We loved the space and feel of the apartment, ideal for cosy winter evenings indoors. Plenty of room for four adults. The local "loading" bay is ideal for car unloading before parking.

What could be improved: Access is around the rear of a shop and that area is a bit cramped. All ok once inside.
