Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Harbour Lights? It’s actually right there in the thick of Newlyn’s working harbor – and I mean properly in it, not just claiming to be “waterfront” like so many places do. Walking down Four Street, you can literally hear the gulls and the fishing boats puttering around before you even see the hotel sign. The building itself has that solid Cornish stone look that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy, which honestly feels right for this part of Penzance.

The thing about staying here is you’re getting the real deal when it comes to harbor life. I mean, Newlyn isn’t some sanitized marina – it’s where the actual fishing fleet comes in, so there’s this genuine energy that you just don’t get at those polished resort places. The rooms (well, the one I stayed in anyway) had these thick stone walls that keep things properly quiet at night, though you’ll still catch the morning sounds of the boats if you’re a light sleeper. Not in a bad way, actually – it’s sort of charming once you get used to it. The furnishings feel thoughtfully chosen rather than just ordered from some hotel catalog, and the views… honestly, if you get a harbor-facing room, you’re basically watching a working postcard all day long.

What really works about Harbour Lights is how it sits in the landscape here. You’re a proper walk along the harbor wall to get into Penzance proper, but that’s part of the charm – Newlyn has its own personality with the fish market and those narrow streets that wind up from the water. There’s decent parking (which anyone who’s driven around Cornwall in summer will appreciate), and the staff actually know the area well enough to point you toward things like the best spots along the coastal path or which pubs locals actually drink in rather than just the obvious tourist ones. The 9.1 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, just doing the seaside harbor hotel thing really, really well. Plus, being this close to the South West Coast Path means you can be hiking those dramatic clifftop sections within minutes if that’s your thing.

The property was exactly as described—clean, well-maintained, and very welcoming. The location was perfect for exploring the area, and the check-in process was smooth and hassle-free.

The host was responsive and friendly, always available to answer questions or provide recommendations. Small touches like fresh towels, fast Wi-Fi, Biscuits, glass of wine and a well-equipped kitchen made the stay even better.

What could be improved: My only issue was the shower enclosure—it’s quite small, especially for a big guy like me. It made showering a bit uncomfortable.

Cute little cottage bed was comfy. Good base to sightsee from, great little pub seconds down the alley. You could here the seagulls at 4am but we're provided with ear plugs no problem for us.

What could be improved: No parking, it was a bit hard to find a space close by but it was bank holiday so maybe to be expected

  • Jennie from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (10/10)

Lovely cottage in a beautiful village

  • Michelle from Zimbabwe – 5 May 2025 (10/10)

I am so glad we found this lovely little place to stay for the Easter weekend! What a gem! Beautiful cottage, in a gorgeous location, with delicious treats provided by Adele. We so enjoyed the walks, dinner at the pub nearby, and the convenient location from which to explore Western Cornwall. Very highly recommended

    What could be improved: Nothing

The size of the house, and how cosy the house was perfect for us. The little added extras left around the house from the owner before we arrived, such as wine, milk, biscuits, and toilet rolls.
The bed was super comfy and huge, too, which was a bonus.
There was also a really nice pub at the end of the alleyway that served absolutely delicious food and was super friendly. There is a really nice cinema/bar in the town too, which was super quirky and perfect for an evening out. It's within walking distance, too! A very busy fish and chip shop with locally caught fish and a co-op for stocking up.
Despite Newlyn being the biggest working harbour in Cornwall, we barely heard it at all during the night. But the owner had left earplugs in the bedroom to cover any possibilities – the only thing is seagulls! They're so loud around 6am, but we're early risers, so it wasn't a problem for us.
The location was fab too, as it's so.close to the A30 to be able to get anywhere in Cornwall, and there is a B road available which means you don't have to go through Penzance and can bypass any rush hour traffic.

What could be improved: The lack of parking was frustrating at times, as the nearest car park on the square was always full, so we had to park towards Mousehole on the main road – but that's not the homeowner fault. That's just a downside to that particular village, but it's something to be mindful of if you are protective over your car. There is enough space on the road behind to reverse the car down to unpack/pack, so you don't need to carry suitcases for a long way.
There weren't enough coat hangers in the wardrobe, so we brought some and left them there, but again, it was not a major problem either, probably just an oversight as not everyone unpacks fully
The same is true with the lack of a baking tray, but we purchased one and left it there for others to use in the future.

Clean property will all amenities you need. Great location , short walk to all the great restaurants in Newlyn

  • Tony from Australia – 29 March 2025 (10/10)

The ease of access, lock box with key.
Not knowing the area of Penzance at all, we were not sure where to stay. Chose here on value for money and facilities offered and photos.
So very happy. We love walking and hiking, so this location is perfect. We walked the coastal path to Porthcurno and got bus back one day.. We went another day on foot to Mousehole. Also walked to Penzance for train to St Ives. No need to use a car and worry about parking it again

What could be improved: Nothing all fantastic

Thanks Adele for our great stay in your home.
