Hotel Description

You know what hit me first about Hallagenna Cottages? The silence. I mean, you’re up on Bodmin Moor in St Breward, so you’d expect it to be quiet, but this is the kind of deep, almost church-like quiet that makes you realize how much noise you’re usually surrounded by. These aren’t your typical holiday cottages crammed together in some development – they’re properly spaced out stone buildings that feel like they’ve been sitting here watching the moor for centuries.

The location is honestly perfect if you’re the type who wants to actually explore Cornwall rather than just tick boxes. You’re maybe twenty minutes from Camelford if you need proper shops, but here’s what I love – you can walk straight onto the moor from your front door. No driving to find a footpath, no hunting for parking. The South West Coast Path feels achievable from here (I mean, it’s still a bit of a drive to the really dramatic cliff sections, but Tintagel’s not far), and if you’re into that whole King Arthur thing, you’re basically in the heart of it all. Bodmin Moor has this wild, slightly eerie beauty that grows on you – especially when the mist rolls in during the early mornings.

The cottages themselves are beautifully done without feeling overly precious about it. Stone floors that actually make sense in a building this old, proper thick walls that keep things cool in summer, and – this matters more than you’d think – really good heating for those inevitable damp Cornwall evenings. The kitchens are well thought out too, clearly designed by someone who actually cooks rather than just heats up ready meals. Parking’s right outside your door, which sounds basic but you’ll appreciate it when you’re unloading after a day of hiking in the rain. The whole setup feels authentic rather than theme-park-ish, if you know what I mean. It’s got that 9.5 rating for good reason – everything just works properly, from the WiFi (surprisingly decent for being in the middle of nowhere) to the shower pressure. Sure, you’ll hear sheep occasionally, and if there’s a proper Atlantic storm rolling in, you’ll definitely know about it, but that’s part of the charm. This isn’t a place for people who want room service and a concierge – it’s for folks who want a genuinely beautiful base for exploring one of Cornwall’s most atmospheric corners.

Stunning location and a gorgeous view every morning. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed and it felt like a home from home. Wonderful owners who are always on hand if needed.

    What could be improved: Nothing.

The cottage is stunning, warm and cosy. The surrounding area is beautiful. The hosts were lovely and friendly.

  • Sophie from United Kingdom – 24 October 2024 (9/10)

Pretty much everything. Beautiful hamlet of cottages in a peaceful, rural setting. The layout, condition and cleanliness of the old barn was incredible, couldn’t have asked for more, we really felt like we were the first to ever use the cottage! It had such a warm and cosy feel. The cottage was stocked with everything you could ever need and the information provided by the hosts was s comprehensive and helpful. Hosts were super friendly and welcoming too. A perfect short break.

What could be improved: Nothing to not like.
Really minor points were that we couldn’t reach the bathroom velux so maybe something to assist with that and the kettle needed a second boil to be hot enough but they didn’t deter from our perfect stay.

  • Kate from Australia – 20 October 2024 (10/10)

The amazing location, the cottages were gorgeous and so comfortable and clean. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly. The miniature pigs were an added bonus. The close location to the Old Inn.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Anthony from United Kingdom – 15 October 2024 (10/10)

The cottage (Old Brock) was lovely, cosy, clean and quirky in the nicest way. It is in a perfect location to explore Bodmin Moor, the north Cornish Coast and particularly the Camel Trailway as the start is just down the road.
Mick and Janine are so welcoming, friendly and helpful and have created a little gem. The welcome pack waiting for us was much appreciated, especially the Cornish Cream Tea kit and biscuit's. We also enjoyed saying good morning to the pigs and pony.
The Old Inn in the St Breward village is a locals pub with a great atmosphere. The Sunday carvery is a must do, but you will need to book. We will definitely be coming back as soon as possible.

What could be improved: Can' think of anything.

  • Uwe from Switzerland – 1 October 2024 (8/10)

    Everything was nice

What could be improved: The moldy smell in the master bedroom

  • Paul from United Kingdom – 27 September 2024 (10/10)

We had excellent communication from Mick and Janine before arrival which built our confidence that we had a picked a great place to stay. They gave us a warm welcome upon arrival and the addition of a pack of goodies was lovely. The cottage was comfy, clean and well equipped. The location is convenient for visiting the area, especially the north coast. Bodmin Moor is literally outside the window so it was lovely to see the wildlife wandering around outside. Our dog loved her walks out on the moor (pack a pair of wellies). The local pub is a 10 – 15 mins walk away where good grub is served and the portions are enormous. We had a great time at the cottage and I'm sure we will return. Thank you Mick and Janine.

What could be improved: Nothng, it was all fab.

  • Alexandra from Australia – 22 September 2024 (9/10)

Lovely cosey cottage in beautiful countryside. Beautifully decorated. Friendly, helpful owners.

What could be improved: Nothing about the property. It was a little difficult to find driving through very narrow lanes.
