You know what struck me first about Gulland? It’s tucked away in this little hamlet between Trewarmett and Treknow that most people drive right past on their way to Tintagel Castle – which, honestly, works in your favor because you get all the drama of Cornwall’s north coast without the crowds that swarm the more obvious spots. The house itself is this gorgeous converted property that sleeps eight comfortably, and I mean actually comfortably, not that cramped vacation rental way where someone ends up on a dodgy sofa bed.

The hot tub is the real star here, positioned so you can soak while looking out toward the coast (on clear days you can actually glimpse the sea). There’s something pretty magical about slipping into those bubbles after a day hiking the South West Coast Path – and trust me, you’ll want to hike it because Trebarwith Strand is literally a twenty-minute walk down some admittedly steep lanes. The bedrooms are thoughtfully laid out too; the master has this lovely view across the fields, and the other three are sized properly for actual adults, not afterthoughts. What I really appreciated was the kitchen – it’s genuinely equipped for cooking proper meals, which matters when the nearest decent pub (The Port William in Treknow) fills up quickly during summer months.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to explore but also decompress. You’re close enough to Tintagel village to grab supplies or visit the castle ruins, but far enough out that evening sounds are more likely to be sheep than tourists. Parking isn’t an issue – there’s space for several cars, which anyone who’s tried to park near Cornwall’s coast in July will appreciate. I’ll be honest, the wifi can be a bit patchy in some rooms (this is rural Cornwall, after all), but that’s probably a feature not a bug if you’re trying to properly switch off. The 9.8 rating makes complete sense when you experience how well-maintained everything is – from the hot tub filtration system that actually works properly to little touches like decent shower pressure and blackout curtains that let you sleep past sunrise. It’s the kind of place where someone clearly thought about what guests actually need rather than just what looks good in photos.
