You know what caught me off guard about Golden Dunes Retreat? It’s one of those places that actually lives up to its name. I mean, you’re literally looking out at proper golden sand dunes from your window, and honestly, Cornwall doesn’t always deliver on those picture-perfect expectations. But this spot at Par Sands Holiday Park really does.

The whole setup is pretty clever – it’s dog-friendly in that proper way where your four-legged mate isn’t just tolerated but genuinely welcomed. I watched families with their labs and spaniels heading straight from the accommodation down to the beach without any of that awkward “is this okay?” feeling you get at some places. The beach here stretches for ages, and during low tide (which you’ll want to time if you’re planning proper beach walks), it feels like you’ve got the whole Cornish coast to yourself. Par isn’t one of those tourist hotspots like Padstow or St. Ives, which works in your favor – especially if you’re trying to avoid the summer crowds that descend on the more famous spots.

What I really appreciated was how the retreat sits within the holiday park but doesn’t feel like you’re stuck in some generic caravan situation. The accommodation has that comfortable, lived-in quality where everything actually works – decent shower pressure, proper heating for those unexpectedly chilly Cornish evenings, and enough space that you’re not tripping over your luggage every five minutes. The kitchen setup is thoughtful too, with enough kit to cook a proper meal if you fancy staying in rather than driving to one of the pubs in Par village. Speaking of which, The Britannia Inn is maybe a ten-minute walk if you want decent pub grub without the tourist markup. The whole area feels refreshingly normal – you’ve got the Eden Project about twenty minutes away if you want the big attraction experience, but you can also just potter around St. Austell or take the coastal path toward Polkerris (gorgeous little spot, by the way) without any grand plans.

The 9.7 rating makes sense when you spend time here. It’s not trying to be some fancy boutique experience, but everything feels well thought out. Check-in was straightforward, parking’s right there without any drama, and the whole place has this relaxed vibe that lets you settle in properly. Even in peak season, it doesn’t feel chaotic – though I’d definitely book ahead if you’re planning a summer visit with the dog, because word’s getting out about this place. The combination of proper beach access, dog-friendly everything, and that perfect Cornwall location without the Cornwall tourist prices? That’s getting harder to find these days.
