Fowey, Cute Cottage

You know what caught me off guard about this little place on Newtown? How quiet it actually is, considering you’re literally a two-minute walk from Fowey’s main drag. I mean, you’d expect some tourist noise filtering up from the harbor, but honestly, once you’re tucked inside this cottage, it’s just the occasional seagull and maybe some gentle chatter from people wandering back from the Ship Inn after dinner.

The cottage itself – well, it’s one of those places that manages to feel authentically Cornish without being all twee about it. The owners clearly know what they’re doing here. There’s proper character in the beams and stonework, but they’ve sorted out all the practical stuff that matters when you’re actually staying somewhere (the shower pressure is brilliant, by the way, and there’s decent Wi-Fi if you need to check in with the outside world). The kitchen’s small but perfectly functional – I actually cooked a few meals using fish from the little shop down on Fore Street, and everything I needed was there. What I really appreciated was the thoughtful touches, like having a proper cafetière instead of just instant coffee, and windows that actually open wide enough to let in that lovely river air.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned to explore Fowey properly. The Gribbin Head walk starts basically from your doorstep if you head down toward Readymoney Cove – takes about twenty minutes to get to the tower on a clear day, and the views back over the estuary are absolutely worth the slight uphill slog. In town, you’re close enough to pop down to the Fowey Festival events if you’re here in May (though book early for that week, obviously), and the regular ferry across to Polruan runs until quite late in summer. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in Fowey – there’s the main car park up by the church, but honestly, once you’re settled at the cottage, you won’t need the car much unless you’re venturing further afield to places like the Eden Project or Lanhydrock. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense when you experience how smoothly everything runs – check-in was seamless, the place was spotless, and when I had a tiny issue with the heating remote (user error, as it turned out), they sorted it within an hour. It’s the kind of place that just works, you know?

  The cottage was very cute and we enjoyed our stay there but mind your head if you are over 6 foot tall. It was good value for money and not that far to the centre of Fowey, about a 30 min walk of 4 mins by bus.
