Folly 2 Overview
First Impressions
When I first spotted Folly 2 tucked into the winding streets of Port Isaac, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone. But this four-star property quickly proved that sometimes the most unassuming places deliver the biggest surprises. The building itself has this charming Cornish character that feels authentic rather than touristy — you know, the kind of place that locals actually respect rather than just tolerate for the tourism money.
Location & Village Life
Port Isaac is one of those fishing villages that somehow manages to stay genuine despite being famous (thanks, Doc Martin). The hotel sits right in the heart of things, which means you’re literally steps from the harbor where fishing boats still bring in their daily catch. I mean, you can actually watch the whole process unfold from morning to evening. What really impressed me was the parking situation — having a guaranteed spot in a village where most streets barely fit one car is honestly a game-changer. Trust me, after driving those narrow Cornish lanes, you’ll appreciate not having to hunt for somewhere to leave your car.
The Accommodation
My room had this perfect balance of modern comfort and coastal charm that didn’t feel forced or overdone. The windows frame views that change throughout the day — morning light hitting the slate rooftops, afternoon sun warming the harbor, evening shadows creeping up the valley walls. You can hear the sea from inside, which sounds romantic until you realize it’s actually the perfect white noise for sleeping. The furnishings feel thoughtfully chosen rather than just ordered from a hotel catalog, if that makes sense.
Exploring the Area
What I loved about staying here is how it puts you right in the rhythm of village life. The Platt (that’s the main beach area) is literally a two-minute walk, and you’ll find yourself wandering down there multiple times a day just because you can. The coastal path starts practically at your doorstep — well, after a short walk through the village — and honestly, some of the most dramatic clifftop scenery in Cornwall unfolds within an hour’s hike in either direction. Plus, being this central means you can easily explore other nearby villages like Polzeath or Padstow without feeling like you’re constantly packing and unpacking.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about this place that just works, especially if you’re traveling as a couple. Maybe it’s the way the village wraps around you without feeling claustrophobic, or how the hotel manages to feel both intimate and well-appointed without any pretension. The 9.2 location rating from recent guests isn’t just numbers — it reflects how rare it is to find accommodation that puts you this close to everything that matters in Port Isaac while still offering genuine comfort and that precious parking space. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to spend time in your room, but the village keeps calling you back outside.
