You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Newquay over the years, but Porth Cottage actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. It’s tucked away on Porth Way, which most people drive right past on their way to the main Fistral Beach madness, but that’s exactly why it works so well. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Porth Beach (the locals’ secret – way less crowded than the main tourist spots), yet far enough from the late-night party crowd that you can actually sleep.

The cottage itself has that proper Cornish character without feeling like someone’s trying too hard to recreate it. I mean, the exposed beams are real, the stone walls have actual history, and there’s this lovely low ceiling upstairs that made my tall friend duck every time he forgot – but it all feels authentic, not staged for Instagram. The kitchen’s surprisingly well-equipped too; I actually cooked a few meals there because, let’s be honest, eating out every night in Newquay gets expensive fast. They’ve got proper sharp knives, decent pans, even a dishwasher – small things that matter when you’re staying more than a couple nights. The living area opens right onto this little garden space where you can sit with your morning coffee and hear the waves but not the traffic from the A3075.

What really sold me though was the location knowledge the owners clearly have. There’s a folder with actual useful recommendations – not just the obvious tourist traps but places like the little bakery on Bank Street that does incredible pasties (go early, they sell out), and the coastal path entrance that most visitors miss completely. Parking’s included, which is huge because trying to find a spot near the beaches in summer is basically a nightmare. The 9.7 rating makes total sense when you add it all up – it’s not fancy in a five-star hotel way, but everything just works. The shower has proper pressure, the WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m looking at you, every other “charming” cottage I’ve stayed in). If you’re the type who wants to experience Newquay without the chaos but still be close enough to walk to everything that matters, this place nails it perfectly.
