Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about East Thorne? It’s one of those places that feels properly Cornish without trying too hard – tucked away in Bude where you’re close enough to hear the Atlantic but far enough from the main tourist strip that you won’t be dodging beach umbrellas on your morning coffee run. The building itself has this lovely weathered stone character that makes you think it’s been watching over this patch of Cornwall for decades, and honestly, that 9.3 rating makes complete sense once you’ve settled in.

I mean, Bude gets a bit of stick sometimes for being the “less dramatic” cousin to places like St. Ives or Padstow, but that’s exactly what makes East Thorne work so well. You’re a proper stone’s throw from Summerleaze Beach – and I’m talking the kind of walk where you can pop back to your room if you’ve forgotten suncream, not some “five-minute walk” that turns into a twenty-minute trek. The staff actually seem to know the area rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots; they’ll tell you about the Bude Sea Pool (which is brilliant if you fancy a swim but find the Atlantic a bit too enthusiastic) or mention that Widemouth Bay is worth the short drive if you want proper surfing waves.

What really gets me is how they’ve managed the whole experience without making it feel precious or over-polished. The rooms are genuinely comfortable – proper blackout curtains if you’re the type who needs darkness to sleep, and the kind of shower pressure that suggests someone actually tested it before opening. Parking was straightforward too, which might sound boring but you’ll appreciate it when you’re not circling narrow Cornish streets with a boot full of beach gear. The breakfast conversation tends to revolve around tide times and which coastal path sections are best in different weather, the sort of chat that happens when people are actually planning to explore rather than just tick boxes. It gets busier during school holidays obviously, but even then it doesn’t feel chaotic – more like a place where families return year after year because they know it works.

Reviews

  • Julie from United Kingdom – 21 June 2025 (8/10)

Overall the accommodation was very nice, everything was there that you would require. Well located for what we needed. Naomi was lovely, who welcomed us.

What could be improved: Only observations, but even though the accommodation was clean, the decor was tired in places, the fan for the bathroom was noisy, and if we switched it off the bathroom light didn't work. Some of the furniture was a bit rickety in the main living area.

  • Gma from United Kingdom – 17 June 2025 (10/10)

The location is perfect as a base to visit places of interest in Cornwall and Devon. East Thorne is a relaxing place to stay. Good for families as there is an area for children to play.

What could be improved: I couldn't find fault with anything

  • Paul from United Kingdom – 24 March 2025 (10/10)

Brilliant location just a few minutes drive out from Bude and local amenities. Plenty of other great places to visit nearby and the hosts were friendly and welcoming. There were some farm animals on site which our daughter loved too. This was our second stay and would happily keep coming back.

  • Natasha from United Kingdom – 21 December 2024 (10/10)

It was beautiful, loved everything about it, even the chickens chasing me

What could be improved: There was nothing not to like
