First Impressions

You know what hits you first when you arrive at Driftwood Spars? It’s not just another seaside pub with rooms — this place has serious character. Perched right on Trevaunance Cove, it feels like it’s been part of the Cornwall coastline forever, weathered stone and all. The moment you step inside, there’s this authentic maritime atmosphere that you can’t fake — old ship timbers, nautical bits and pieces that actually mean something, and windows that frame the kind of sea views that make you want to cancel your other plans.

Location and Setting

Honestly, the location is pretty much unbeatable if you’re after that proper Cornish coastal experience. St. Agnes isn’t one of those overly touristy spots — it’s got this working village feel where locals still outnumber visitors most of the year. You’re literally steps from the beach, and I mean literally — you can watch surfers from some of the rooms. The South West Coast Path runs right past the door, so if you’re into walking, you’ve got miles of dramatic clifftop scenery in both directions. Plus, there’s free parking on site, which anyone who’s tried to park near a Cornish beach in summer will tell you is worth its weight in gold.

The Rooms

The accommodation here isn’t trying to be boutique hotel fancy, and that’s actually refreshing. What you get are comfortable, well-maintained rooms that feel appropriate for the setting — some with those sea views I mentioned, others overlooking the village. The furnishings have that seaside cottage vibe without being overly themed, if you know what I mean. It’s the kind of place where you can dump your sandy walking boots without worrying about pristine carpets, but you’re still comfortable enough to settle in for several nights.

Food and Drink

The breakfast situation here is actually quite impressive — they’ve got everything from continental options to full English, plus vegetarian and vegan choices that go beyond the usual afterthought approach. But honestly, it’s the pub side of things where Driftwood Spars really shines. The restaurant serves proper Cornish fare with local seafood that’s genuinely local, not just marketed that way. The beer selection includes some excellent local brews, and there’s something deeply satisfying about having a pint while watching the waves roll in. The atmosphere gets properly lively in the evenings, especially when there’s live music.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to be both a proper local pub and a genuine base for exploring this part of Cornwall. Couples seem to particularly love it here — and I can see why, given that romantic combination of dramatic coastline and cozy pub atmosphere. It’s not polished in that generic hotel way, but it’s authentic in a way that’s becoming harder to find. You’re staying somewhere that locals actually use, in a village that hasn’t been completely taken over by second homes and gift shops. That’s worth a lot more than thread counts and fancy toiletries, at least in my book.
