You know what caught me off guard about Driftwood Spars? It’s actually built right into the cliff face at Trevaunce Cove – I mean, you’re literally staying inside what used to be mining tunnels from the 1600s. When I first pulled up (parking’s tight, but there’s a small lot), I thought I was at the wrong place because it looks more like a traditional Cornish pub than a hotel. Which, honestly, it sort of is.

The whole setup is pretty unique – your room might be carved directly into the rock, and I’m not exaggerating when I say the walls are actually cave walls in some spots. My room had this uneven stone ceiling that made me duck slightly near the window, but the view out to the cove made up for any head-bumping incidents. The sound of waves hitting the rocks below is constant, which some people love and others… well, bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. The rooms themselves are cozy rather than spacious – think character over luxury. The furnishings feel genuinely coastal without being too themed, if that makes sense.

What really makes this place work is the location and the vibe. You’re about a two-minute walk to the actual beach at Trevaunce Cove, which is this perfect little sandy spot tucked between dramatic cliffs. St. Agnes itself is one of those proper Cornish villages where you can still grab pasties from the local bakery and not feel like you’re in a tourist trap. The hotel’s restaurant serves solid pub food – their crab sandwiches are actually excellent, probably because the boats come right up to the quay below. During summer it gets busy (especially weekends), but in shoulder season you’ll have the coastal path practically to yourself. The staff clearly know the area well and can point you toward the less obvious walks – there’s this incredible route up to the Beacon that most visitors miss. Check-in was straightforward, though the building’s layout is a bit maze-like once you’re inside, so don’t be surprised if you take a wrong turn looking for your room the first night. At 8.6 rating, it’s hitting that sweet spot where you’re getting genuine local character without sacrificing comfort entirely.
