Hotel Description

So I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Crossways Corner Cottage on Chapel Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. You know how sometimes places in these tiny Cornish villages can be hit or miss? But this little gem in Middle Dimson absolutely blew me away, and that 9.6 rating suddenly made perfect sense.

The cottage sits right where you’d want it to be – close enough to Gunnislake that you can actually walk to the proper shops and that decent pub (The Rising Sun, if you’re wondering), but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with any traffic noise. Which, let’s face it, there isn’t much traffic out here anyway, but still. What really got me was how thoughtfully everything’s been done inside. I mean, you can tell someone actually cares about this place rather than just throwing together another holiday rental. The kitchen’s properly equipped – none of that “one bent fork and a rusty can opener” nonsense you sometimes get. And the bed? Honestly, I slept better there than I do at home, which is saying something.

The location’s brilliant if you’re planning to explore this part of Cornwall properly. You’re literally fifteen minutes from Tavistock (great for proper grocery shopping and that fantastic pannier market on Fridays), and the Tamar Valley’s right on your doorstep. I spent hours just wandering the old mining trails – there’s this incredible walk that starts practically from the cottage door and takes you down toward the river. Plus, if you’re into gardens at all, you’ve got to make the trip to Cotehele House. It’s maybe twenty minutes away, and the medieval gardens there are absolutely stunning, especially in late spring when everything’s going mad with color.

What I really appreciated was the attention to detail that you don’t always get, even at four-star places. Proper heating that actually works (crucial in these old Cornish cottages), decent water pressure in the shower, and – this might sound silly – but really good lighting for reading. Little things like that matter when you’re trying to unwind. The only tiny critique I’d have is that the WiFi can be a bit patchy, but honestly? That turned out to be a blessing. There’s something quite liberating about being properly disconnected for a few days, especially in such a peaceful spot. Just don’t expect to be streaming Netflix in HD is all I’m saying.

  • Stuart from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (9/10)

Spotlessly clean. Good facilities. Quiet peaceful village. Good value for money. Lovely host to greet us.

What could be improved: My only slight issue was it’s only a double bed not kingsize. But that’s only personal preference as I’m 6 foot 5. I did keep banging my feet on the wooden frame. I ought to have checked before I booked so that’s my own fault. You will need a car aswel. There isn’t anything there within walking distance. Good location to drive and explore Cornwall and Devon tho
