Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Little Phoenix in Talland, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the name sounds grander than what you’ll find, but that’s actually part of its charm. This cozy beachfront spot sits right on one of Cornwall’s quieter stretches, and I mean literally on the beach. You know how some places claim “beachfront” and you end up hiking ten minutes to see sand? Not here. Step out the door and you’re practically touching the water.
What really got me was how thoughtfully everything’s been set up. The sea views aren’t just from one awkward corner window – pretty much every angle gives you that postcard-worthy Cornwall coastline. And the indoor pool access they mention? It’s at the local leisure center just down the road, which honestly works out better than having some tiny hotel pool. The locals use it too, so you get that authentic community feel rather than being stuck in a tourist bubble. The walk there takes maybe five minutes along the coastal path, and you’ll pass the little village shop where they do surprisingly good pasties (trust me on this one).
I stayed during what the locals call “shoulder season” – late spring when the weather’s decent but the summer crowds haven’t descended yet. Parking was never an issue, which is saying something for this part of Cornwall where finding a spot can be like winning the lottery. The place stays pretty quiet even when full, probably because most guests spend their days exploring the South West Coast Path or poking around Polperro, which is just a short drive away. Actually, if you’re into walking, the path from Talland Bay to Polperro is one of those routes that’ll have you stopping every few minutes to take photos – dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, the whole Cornwall experience without fighting through tourist hordes. What strikes me about this place is how it manages to feel both polished and unpretentious. The 9.5 rating makes sense when you experience it – everything just works without feeling overly fussy. The rooms are comfortable in that “I could actually live here” way, and the staff clearly know the area inside and out. They pointed me toward this little pub inland that I never would’ve found otherwise, and suggested the best times to visit nearby Looe when the day-trippers have cleared out. It’s those kinds of local insights that make a real difference, you know?
If you’re looking for a proper Cornish coastal experience without the circus atmosphere of the bigger resort towns, this hits the sweet spot. Just don’t expect nightlife – once the sun sets, it’s all about the sound of waves and maybe a drink while watching ships pass by. Which, honestly, is exactly what you want from a place like this.

Everything. Who wouldn’t like the location? Yards from the bay, the smell of the sea, the cry of the gulls and the peace when visitors to the local beach cafe have left. If you have no intentions of driving somewhere everyday but relish challenging walking then this is perfect.
The house/apartment/cottage – not sure exactly how to describe it is perfect for couples. The balcony has great views – ignore the chimneys of the lower property, that can’t be helped.
If you intend to self cater then take all you need. There is no local convenient store.

If you're looking for tranquility and a peaceful getaway, look no further.
The views are outstanding and you have access to Looe one way and my favourite fishing village, Polperro, the other via the stunning south coast pathway.
The cottage is fantastic value for money and the host is very quick to respond with any questions.
Waitrose deliver here too, so be sure to take advantage of them!
