Hotel Description
You know that feeling when you stumble across a place that’s clearly been someone’s passion project? That’s exactly what Chy An Lur is – this gorgeously restored Cornish property tucked away in Blowinghouse, just outside Redruth. I mean, the name literally means “moon house” in Cornish, which gives you a hint about the thoughtfulness that’s gone into everything here.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to properly explore Cornwall without dealing with the tourist crowds. You’re about fifteen minutes from Redruth center (which actually has some brilliant pubs and that lovely old market hall), but far enough out that you’ll wake up to nothing but birdsong and maybe the occasional sheep. The drive in takes you through proper Cornish countryside – those narrow lanes with hedgerows so tall you feel like you’re driving through green tunnels. Fair warning though, if you’re not used to single-track roads, take it slow; there are passing places but you’ll definitely meet a tractor or two.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Cornish character while making everything incredibly comfortable. The restoration work is stunning – you can tell they’ve used local craftspeople who actually know what they’re doing with these old buildings. The rooms have this lovely mix of original features (proper thick stone walls that keep everything beautifully cool) and modern touches that actually work. The bed linens are that perfect weight where you know someone’s thought about what guests actually want, not just what looks good in photos. And honestly, the 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of attention to detail that you notice without really thinking about it, like decent water pressure and curtains that actually block out light.
The hosts clearly know Cornwall inside and out, which is invaluable when you’re trying to avoid the obvious tourist traps. They’ll point you toward the coastal paths that locals use (the section toward Portreath is absolutely gorgeous and way less crowded than the main South West Coast Path), or tell you which days to hit Truro market. Being this close to the old mining heartland means you’re surrounded by fascinating industrial heritage – the engine houses dotting the landscape are pretty spectacular, especially around sunset. Plus you’re perfectly positioned for day trips: St. Ives is doable but you can also easily reach the less touristy north coast beaches like Porthtowan, where you can actually find a parking spot in summer.
The whole experience feels refreshingly genuine in a county where it’s easy to end up somewhere that’s all show and no substance. There’s proper attention paid to the little things – good coffee, local information that’s actually useful, and that rare quality of feeling welcome without being fussed over. It’s the sort of place that makes you want to book again before you’ve even left, particularly if you’re someone who appreciates Cornwall for what it actually is rather than what the postcards show you.

This stay was a home away from home. Everything thought of and had everything we needed for a lovely family stay. The beds were so comfortable and the extra bonus of the pool table at the basement was amazing! Lorraine who met us was brilliant. Great communication and so friendly! Even had some lovely scones upon welcome! What a lovely stay we had!

Beautiful property, ideal for two couples. Location good for us, visiting family in central Redruth.

Host communicated in advance of our arrival and was there to greet us, provide keys and stay a while to give us a look around the property and chat about the area and our plans. The house was immaculately clean, comfortable and well provisioned including a lovely welcome pack of cream scones. Stairgates were set up for our children in advance. The property is well located for easy access to head out in all directions which suited our trip perfectly and we slept very well each night when we got in from a day out. Very pleased with our choice to stay here and we would not hesitate to come again and recommend to others.
What could be improved: Some very minor suggestions we felt would make it even better:
1. A dishwasher in the kitchen rather than the washing machine we thought would be more useful for people like us that want to be lazy and not wash up!
2. The lighting in the living room is all cool white which in the evenings was a bit too harsh for us and the funky corner lamp wasn't able to provide adequate light if we switched the main lights off. Would suggest warm lighting either changing the wall lights or providing additional side lamps for soft evening light.
Neither of these points were significant drawbacks but because we had such a good time we noticed these minor points and thought they would be useful points to pick up on and improve.Liz from United Kingdom – 26 February 2025 (10/10)

Well appointed & equipped. Great location. Host welcome was very nice. Had lots of additional touches like earplugs & fresh bread which made the stay extra special. Hot water & heating were great. House was clean & tidy. Beds comfortable. Tv & streaming services & wifi all excellent.
What could be improved: If we were being super picky, the mattress in the downstairs room was a little firm for our liking but that is our preference rather than an actual issue.Leigh from France – 29 December 2024 (10/10)
Everything we needed for a comfortable stay in a lovely spacious house. Proximity to local amenities. Nice back garden with countryside views.
What could be improved: Nothing. The house suited our requirements perfectly.Jock from United Kingdom – 21 November 2024 (10/10)
I didn't like anything. I loved it. I spend a lot of time working away, I normally stay in hotels, but Chy An Lur came up when I did a search. It was amazing! It was a lovely bungalow, which was a tardis. Two bedrooms upstairs and 2 rooms in the basement. One of which is a games room with a snooker table and another which has comfy chairs and bean bags, a proper chillout zone. Lorraine, the owner, was there to greet me on my arrival. She ran through everything with me and bought me bread, milk and butter. Such a lovely gesture. Thank you Lorraine.
What could be improved: The typical Cornish weather this time of year 🤣Justine from United Kingdom – 12 October 2024 (10/10)
SO much room !
Everything we needed was on hand, the beds were VERY comfy and despite the host warning that their could be noise from the road we didn’t find it to be an issue
What could be improved: A light in the back garden would be handy !Katharina from Germany – 15 July 2024 (10/10)
The house itself was big and comfortable with the host paying great attention to detail. We really did not miss anything and were even enjoying staying in on a rainy morning. The house even provides a play room in the basement. Also, everything was super clean. The location is outstanding as it allowed us to explore Cornwall easily in all directions. Last, Lorraine and James even included some welcome groceries and drinks, which really came unexpected, yet shows how much they both try to ensure the best possible experience.
On a side note, we came with a dog and the property has proper fencing which alles the dog to walk freely as well.
