Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Charming Cornwall Cottage in Landrake, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked away in this tiny village that most people zoom past on their way to the bigger coastal towns. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones hiding in plain sight.
This place absolutely nails that authentic Cornish cottage experience without feeling like a tourist trap. The owner clearly gets it – there’s this perfect balance of keeping the original character (think proper thick stone walls that actually keep things quiet, and those small windows that frame the countryside just right) while making sure you’re not roughing it. The kitchen’s been updated enough that you can actually cook a decent meal, and the shower has proper pressure, which honestly surprised me given how remote it feels. I loved that they kept the original slate floors downstairs – they’re a bit cold in the mornings, but there’s something satisfying about the sound your footsteps make. The cottage sits on this quiet lane where the biggest traffic you’ll see is the occasional tractor heading to the fields, and if you’re lucky, you might catch the local farmer walking his border collie around sunset.
What really sold me on this place, though, is how it works as a base for exploring this part of Cornwall that doesn’t get the crowds. Landrake itself is barely a blip – there’s a village hall and not much else – but you’re actually perfectly positioned between the Eden Project (about 20 minutes if you avoid the tourist traffic) and some of the quieter sections of the coast. The owners left this hand-drawn map showing footpaths that connect to the Saints’ Way, an old pilgrims’ route that most visitors never hear about. I spent an afternoon following it toward the coast and barely saw another soul. Plus, if you need supplies or a proper pub meal, Saltash is just a few minutes’ drive, and you can actually see the Tamar Bridge from some of the upstairs windows on clear days. The parking situation is refreshingly simple – just pull right up to the cottage, no permits or meters to worry about. I stayed here in late September when the summer crowds had cleared out, and the whole area had this peaceful, end-of-season feeling that made me want to extend my stay. The cottage gets booked up pretty solid during summer months, but honestly, I think the shoulder seasons might be when it shines brightest.
