Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Captains Quarters? The name actually makes sense when you’re standing there on Foundry Drive – you can practically smell the maritime history of Charlestown in the air, and this place feels like it was designed by someone who gets that whole nautical vibe without going overboard with anchors and rope everywhere.
I mean, this is proper Cornwall here, not some touristy fake fishing village, and the hotel sits right in the heart of where things actually happen. Foundry Drive might not ring a bell if you’re not familiar with the area, but honestly, you’re a stone’s throw from the harbor and all those narrow streets that wind down toward the water. The location is honestly brilliant – you can walk to the Eden Project if you’re feeling ambitious (though it’s a proper hike), but more importantly, you’re right there for exploring Charlestown’s famous tall ships and that gorgeous harbor that’s been in about a million TV shows and films. The parking situation is actually decent, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Cornish village streets with a car will appreciate.
What really won me over though was how the place feels lived-in rather than corporate. The rooms have this sort of understated nautical theme that doesn’t make you feel like you’re sleeping in a theme park, and the 4-star rating shows in the details – proper shower pressure, decent Wi-Fi that actually works (crucial when you’re trying to upload those harbor photos), and beds that don’t leave you feeling like you’ve been sleeping on a ship in rough seas. The staff seem to genuinely know the area too, not just the standard tourist spots. They’ll point you toward the quieter coastal walks or tell you which pubs the locals actually drink in – that kind of insider knowledge you can’t get from a guidebook. I was there during shoulder season and it had this perfect balance of being lively without feeling overrun, though I imagine summer gets pretty hectic given how popular Charlestown has become.
The whole area comes alive differently depending on when you visit – early morning when the fishing boats are heading out, you get this authentic working harbor feel, but then during the day when the tour groups arrive it transforms into something more polished and photo-ready. From your room at Captains Quarters, you’re close enough to enjoy both versions without being right in the thick of the crowds. Honestly, with an 8.8 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after staying there I can see why people keep coming back. It’s one of those places that manages to feel special without trying too hard – which in Cornwall, where you’ve got everything from luxury spa resorts to basic B&Bs, is actually pretty refreshing.

Clean comfortable good location for exploring the coast and quiet.
What could be improved: No blackout blinds in bedrooms 2nd bedroom could do with a chest of drawers and a mirror. Cafetière would be good addition to kitchen.Karen from United Kingdom – 19 May 2025 (8/10)
A good base for a stay in Cornwall. House was very comfortable, clean with very good amenities.
What could be improved: Property has a small shared driveway which was troublesome at times to access with cars parked on the road. Four O’clock check-in is a bit too late!Cathy from United Kingdom – 18 September 2024 (9/10)
The house was beautifully decorated and fitted out. The beds were super comfortable and the host responded promptly to messages. The kitchen was also well equipped with everything you could need. We were just a short drive from The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and a short walk to Charlestown harbour where we spent lots of time in the wonderful museum, during wet weather. A fabulous place to stay!
What could be improved: Parking was tight but we managed in our small car.Lyndsey from United Kingdom – 4 July 2024 (9/10)
Key safe made it super easy to gain access, house was an absolute delight with everything you’d ever need. Location is excellent and being able to park on the front was high bonus. We loved it and will for sure return.
What could be improved: That I did not book another few nights ! Next time I’d take a travel blackout curtain but that’s due to me having a baby and not an issue for everyone.Pamela from United Kingdom – 1 July 2024 (9/10)
Excellent facilities and location
What could be improved: Parking was available but with a long car was tricky when other residents parked directly oppositeNicola from United Kingdom – 24 June 2024 (9/10)
