Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Bryher Cottage in Trungle, I wasn’t entirely sure I was in the right place. It’s tucked away in this tiny hamlet just outside Paul (not exactly a household name unless you’re familiar with the Penwith peninsula), and you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. The cottage sits there quietly, almost secretively, while most tourists are busy fighting for parking spots down in Penzance or queuing up for the Minack Theatre.

The thing about this place is that it gets Cornwall right in a way that a lot of accommodations miss completely. I mean, sure, you’re about ten minutes from the chaos of Penzance’s harbor, but here you’ve got proper countryside quiet – the kind where you actually hear individual birds rather than just generic “nature sounds.” The owners clearly know their stuff because everything feels thoughtfully considered without being fussy about it. The interiors have that lived-in comfort that makes you want to curl up with a book, and honestly, the kitchen is better equipped than most places I’ve rented (which matters when the nearest proper supermarket involves a bit of a drive). What really sold me was waking up that first morning and realizing how dark it actually gets out here at night – no street lights bleeding through curtains, just proper sleep.

The location is sort of brilliant if you think about it strategically. You’re close enough to walk down to Paul village – there’s a decent pub there, nothing fancy but good for a pint and some local chat – but you’re also perfectly positioned for the coastal path without having to deal with the summer crowds that descend on places like St. Ives. Land’s End is maybe fifteen minutes by car, and you can actually get to some of the better cliff walks without the tourist buses. Parking at the cottage is straightforward too, which might sound mundane but try finding a spot in Mousehole on a sunny weekend and you’ll appreciate having your own space. The 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s one of those places that just works, where someone’s clearly thought through what travelers actually need rather than what looks good in photos. If you’re the type who wants to explore West Cornwall properly rather than just tick off the famous spots, this is exactly where you want to base yourself.

The accomodation is situated well in Trungle village, very near Paul Village and has a private car parking space right by the accomodation. Well lit by natural light, opening front windows and velux windows too, with blinds. The room well furnished. The furniture is comfortable with superking bed being very spacious and luxurious, and good pillows. TV with all the stations. The hosts provide shampoo, handwash, body wash and hand lotion in the shower room. There is a decent sized drawer under the sink and a heated towel rail. Good ventilation in the shower room with a velux window. Instant hot water. and nice quality towels in the shower room. The hosts come in every day and provide a choice of teas and coffees, sugars, breakfast cerials, cutlery and crockery. They also provide some goodies in the fridge as well as fresh fruits and pastries if you want them. Their generosity is second to none, catering for your individual requirements. The kitchenette area or pantry is pretty small but adequate for boiling a kettle, prepping breakfast, washing up and putting away, with a decent sized sink and basin. Cupboards above hold the crockery and there is space enough for storing packets of food etc. Guests can sit outside at the front of the hosts house to enjoy the sun, or read. A back door from the accomodation leads to the small rear garden seating area where its sunny in the morning.

What could be improved: An extra rubber bath/shower mat in the shower might be the answer as the drain is situated right in the middle of the shower floor so placing the rubber shower mat over it causes overflow onto the tiles. At present the mat can be situated to the side or to the end of the shower tray but without a second rubber shower mat, we found the remaining shower tray floor a bit slippy. The kitchenette or pantry area is a little cramped, so one person at a time! Nothing major to dislike about the accomodation.

We felt immediately at home in the property;it was extremely clean and comfortable with lovely linens and toiletries. John is the ultimate host who makes it his mission to make guests feel special and pampered. The daily breakfast was varied and plentiful with added surprises and treats. Off-road parking at the property was a real bonus and we would not hesitate to recommend this gem of a property in a quaint, attractive area of Cornwall.

What could be improved: We liked everything

Bryher Cottage is the most spacious B&B that I’ve stayed at in Cornwall, It was impeccably clean and a lot of thought has gone into the decor which I found delightful.

John, one of the host’s was spot on with communication soon after my booking and was keen to find out if I had any dietary requirements. I was also able to check in slightly earlier if it suited me. I received a warm greeting and was shown how everything worked and also given recommendations for places to visit in the area and good places to eat.

It was apparent throughout my stay that John and Louise were keen to ensure that my stay was as comfortable as possible, it seemed that nothing was too much to ask. (I’m slightly dairy intolerant and John & Louise offered alternatives for me which I really appreciated)

The super kingsized bed was really comfortable (I like a medium/medium firm mattress) with a choice of flattish or thicker pillows.

The accommodation is ideally situated just outside Mousehole in Paul, there’s no shop in the village but the Kings Arms pub is a five minute walk away and Mousehole a fifteen minute walk with a good selection of cafes/pubs/restaurants to suit all budgets.

The Mousehole bus is probably the best service that I’ve found whilst living in Cornwall, it runs every half an hour from morning until 11pm between Mousehole and Penzance (even on Sundays 😊)

A very comfortable stay, with continental breakfast included. John is very welcoming and friendly, informative and helpful. He responds promptly to any queries. The special additional treats left in the room were much appreciated! Our two labradors were also made to feel very welcome!

Bryher is a home away from home. The unit is beautifully appointed, comfortable and has everything that you need. The skylights add an extra special touch. John is a very accommodating host, he was able to give us great advice about many things, including the best way to get about. The breakfast and goodies that John provides are exceptional and thoughtful, advice about places to eat is very helpful.

What could be improved: We had no complaints.

  • Dean from United Kingdom – 30 July 2024 (10/10)

We had such a wonderful stay here with our 2 cockapoos The location was great for key places to visit. Our favorite beach by far has to be the beautiful Gwynver worth the rugged walk down bit of a climb back up and dog friendly .What made our stay special was the hosts John and Louise leaving daily treats of all kinds of delights very much enjoyed! oh and the bed is soooo comfy with cool cotton pillows and sheets which is so important i feel so Thank you.
