Hotel Description

Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of B&Bs across Cornwall, and honestly, Britannia House just gets it right in ways that surprised me. It’s tucked away in Helston – you know, that market town everyone drives through on their way to the Lizard Peninsula but never really stops to explore properly. Well, turns out that’s actually perfect because you get all the charm without the tourist crowds trampling through every morning.

The house itself has this lovely Victorian thing going on, but not in that stuffy, don’t-touch-anything way some places do. I mean, yes, there’s period furniture and those gorgeous high ceilings, but everything feels lived-in rather than museum-like. The owner clearly knows their stuff about keeping old buildings comfortable – the heating actually works (which, if you’ve done the Cornwall B&B circuit, you’ll know isn’t always a given), and there’s proper water pressure in the showers. Small things, but they matter when you’re peeling off wet walking gear after a day on the coastal path. Speaking of which, you’re perfectly positioned here for hitting the South West Coast Path – the section down to Kynance Cove is absolutely stunning, though I’d recommend getting an early start if you’re going in summer because the car park fills up fast.

What really won me over though was the breakfast situation. Forget your standard continental nonsense – we’re talking proper Cornish fare with local sausages and eggs that actually taste like something. The dining room overlooks this sweet little garden where you can sit with your coffee if the weather’s behaving, which in my experience happens more often in Helston than down on the coast where the wind never stops. The whole place just has this relaxed vibe where you can chat with other guests without feeling like you’re trapped in forced conversation, you know? And parking – thank god – is sorted right there, which saves you the headache of circling narrow Cornish streets with your wing mirrors tucked in. It’s about a fifteen-minute walk into Helston’s center if you want to poke around the shops or grab dinner at one of the pubs, though honestly, you might find yourself just wanting to settle in with a book by the time evening rolls around. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be fancy, just genuinely welcoming and comfortable in that particularly Cornish way.

  • Michael from United Kingdom – 28 August 2024 (9/10)

Our room was large & stylish with an ensuite, extra large bed.TV. settee and table and two chairs (a lot of b&b & hotels only seem to supply 1 chair per room). Plus dressing gowns. Kettle, tea and coffee plus biscuits and bottled water. Use of large fridge. Breakfast was on a communal table where everybody can have a chat & get to know each other instead of being on separate tables, which can be quite isolating. We were served a great wholesome vegetarian breakfast each morning with plenty of decent ground coffee to wash it all down with. Use of the lounge to have a drink, eat a snack & watch TV of an evening. Plus the host Karen is very welcoming & friendly and made us feel at home. She is very interesting to talk too & very knowledgeable of places to visit in the immediate area, ie the Park & Ride Train into St Ives & decent places to eat out. All in all, we had a great stay.

What could be improved: One small niggle, bathroom was a bit tight for space, but hey it's an old tastefully decorated cornish cottage. So really it was quite bearable.
