Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Barn Cottage in Poundstock, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address just says EX23 0NA, which if you don’t know this corner of Cornwall, basically means you’re properly out in the countryside. But that’s actually the whole point, isn’t it?
This place sits in one of those quiet North Cornwall villages that most people drive straight through on their way to the more famous coastal spots. Poundstock’s about ten minutes inland from Bude, which means you get all the dramatic coastline without the summer crowds trampling through your morning coffee. The cottage itself – well, calling it a cottage almost undersells it. It’s got that proper four-star polish while keeping all the character you’d want from a converted barn. The exposed beams aren’t just for show, and you can actually hear the history in the way the old timber settles at night. Parking’s right there (thank god, because navigating these narrow lanes with a rental car is… an experience), and the whole setup feels refreshingly straightforward after dealing with some of the fussier places along the coast.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between rustic charm and modern comfort. The kitchen’s properly equipped – I mean, you could actually cook a decent meal instead of just heating up supermarket sandwiches. The sitting area has these deep sofas that you sink into after a day walking the coastal path, and honestly, the Wi-Fi works better here than it does in some London hotels I’ve stayed in. You know what surprised me most though? How quiet it gets at night. Like, properly quiet – no traffic, no late-night revelers, just the occasional sheep making conversation in the neighboring field. If you’re coming from a city, it’s almost startling how still everything becomes after about 9 PM. The whole area around here is perfect for those long, rambling walks where you lose track of time – the South West Coast Path picks up just a few miles away at Millook, and there’s this fantastic circular walk through Poundstock Grange that hardly anyone seems to know about. The 9.5 rating makes total sense when you factor in that they’ve thought about the details that actually matter: proper heating (crucial in Cornwall, whatever the season), blackout curtains that work, and a shower with decent pressure. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night because leaving feels like too much effort, and honestly, there are worse problems to have.
