Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Ash Cottage in Launceston – honestly, the name made me think it might be some generic themed place trying too hard. But this little gem actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in one of those quiet residential areas where you can still hear the church bells from St. Mary Magdalene in the morning, but you’re not dealing with all the tourist foot traffic that can make the town center feel a bit overwhelming during summer.
The thing that really got me was how they’ve managed to keep the character of what I’m guessing was originally a proper Cornish cottage while making it work as a proper hotel. The stone walls are the real deal – thick enough that you don’t hear a peep from other guests, which is honestly rare these days. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (no trying to upsell me on breakfast packages or spa treatments), and the owner actually gave me useful local tips, like which days the farmers market runs and where to park if I wanted to walk down to the Kensey rather than drive. The rooms have this sort of understated charm – think exposed beams and slate floors, but with genuinely comfortable beds and proper water pressure in the shower. I mean, you can tell they’ve put thought into the details without going overboard with the rustic theme.
What I really appreciated was the location – you’re close enough to wander into Launceston proper for dinner (the White Hart is about a ten-minute walk if you cut through the back lanes), but far enough out that you actually get some peace in the evenings. Plus, if you’re planning to explore Bodmin Moor or head over to the coast, you’re perfectly positioned without having to navigate through all the narrow town center streets every time you want to get somewhere. Parking’s included, which might not sound like much until you’ve spent twenty minutes circling around looking for a spot near the castle. The breakfast was solid too – proper local ingredients, not the usual mass-produced stuff, and they actually asked how I wanted my eggs cooked rather than just assuming. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the staff actually care about what they’re doing, which makes all the difference when you’re trying to unwind on holiday.
