First Impressions

Walking up Chapel Street in Penzance, you’d almost miss Artist Residence Cornwall if you weren’t looking for it — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. The Georgian townhouse sits quietly among the other period buildings, with just a subtle sign hinting at what’s inside. Once you step through the door though, you realize this isn’t your typical seaside hotel. The interiors feel more like wandering through a carefully curated art gallery where you happen to be able to sleep, with original paintings and quirky sculptures dotting every corner.

Location and Neighborhood

Chapel Street is actually one of Penzance’s most interesting streets — you’re literally a two-minute walk from the harbor and the Scilly Isles ferry terminal, but tucked away from the main tourist drag. I mean, you can pop down to the Egyptian House (that bizarre facade you’ve probably seen in photos) or grab fresh crab sandwiches at the harbor without dealing with crowds. The couples who stay here seem to get it — there’s something romantic about having the town’s best restaurants and that gorgeous waterfront practically on your doorstep, but still feeling like you’ve discovered something a bit secret.

The Rooms

Each room here is completely different, which sounds like it could be a disaster but somehow works perfectly. Mine had this massive piece of local artwork above the bed and vintage furniture that looked like it had stories to tell. The beds are genuinely comfortable — not just hotel-speak comfortable, but the kind where you actually sleep better than at home. You know what struck me most though? The attention to small details, like proper coffee (not those awful pods) and toiletries that don’t smell like generic hotel soap.

Food and Dining

The restaurant downstairs is where this place really shines, and I’m not just saying that because I’m hungry writing this. They focus on local Cornish ingredients, but it’s not the usual “we caught this fish this morning” spiel — the cooking is actually sophisticated. The breakfast alone is worth staying for, with proper Cornish bacon and eggs from farms you could probably walk to. Dinner service gets busy with locals too, which is always a good sign when you’re trying to figure out where to eat in a new town.

Why Guests Love It

Artist Residence Cornwall works because it doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than what it is — a thoughtfully designed place to stay in one of Cornwall’s most underrated towns. The staff seem to genuinely care about the place rather than just going through the motions, and there’s this relaxed creativity in the air that makes you want to linger longer than planned. It’s the sort of place where you end up having better conversations at breakfast with other guests, probably because everyone there chose it for similar reasons — they wanted something with character rather than just a bed for the night.

  Having stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions it always delivers on quality with warm and friendly staff. Rooms verge on the luxurious and with everything that you could need. The breakfast menu is very good and varied with something for everyone's taste.
