You know what struck me first about Artist Residence Cornwall? It’s tucked right on Chapel Street in the heart of Penzance, but somehow it feels like this secret creative hideaway that most tourists just walk past. I mean, the building itself is this gorgeous Georgian townhouse that’s been completely reimagined – and when I say reimagined, I don’t mean they stripped out all the character and slapped on generic hotel finishes. The owners actually get it. Each room feels like you’re staying in a local artist’s studio, with original artwork covering the walls and quirky vintage pieces that somehow all work together perfectly. The whole place has this lived-in, slightly bohemian vibe that makes you want to curl up with a book and a glass of wine.

What really sets this place apart is how it sits in Penzance – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the harbor (you can actually hear the gulls from some rooms, which sounds annoying but is oddly soothing), and Chapel Street puts you right in the thick of the town’s best bits. There’s this fantastic bakery just down the street where locals queue up for proper Cornish pasties, and you’re close enough to the Morrab Gardens that you can sneak over there for morning coffee when the crowds haven’t arrived yet. The staff here actually know the area – not just the tourist stuff, but where to find the best fish and chips or which pub has live music on Thursday nights. Honestly, they treat the place more like a boutique guesthouse than a standard hotel, which means check-in feels personal rather than corporate. Parking can be a bit tricky since it’s right in town, but there’s a public car park nearby, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need your car much anyway.

Here’s the thing about the Artist Residence – it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, and that’s exactly why it works so well. The rooms are comfortable without being flashy (though some of the bathrooms are genuinely gorgeous), the common areas invite you to linger, and there’s this relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just booking a bed for the night. Sure, it’s a 4-star place with an 8.6 rating, but those numbers don’t really capture what makes it memorable. It’s the kind of place where you might end up chatting with other guests over breakfast or discovering a new artist whose work is hanging in the hallway. If you’re looking for a sterile business hotel, this definitely isn’t it – but if you want somewhere with personality that actually connects you to Penzance and Cornwall’s creative spirit, you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere better.

  Having stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions it always delivers on quality with warm and friendly staff. Rooms verge on the luxurious and with everything that you could need. The breakfast menu is very good and varied with something for everyone's taste.
