You know what struck me first about Above the Bay? The name actually makes sense – you really are perched above Penzance’s waterfront, and from certain angles you can catch glimpses of Mount’s Bay stretching toward St. Michael’s Mount. It’s one of those self-contained garden apartments that feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a typical hotel, which honestly is exactly what you want when you’re exploring this part of Cornwall.
The enclosed garden is the real winner here – I mean, parking in Penzance can be an absolute nightmare during summer months, but having your own dedicated spot takes away that stress completely. The garden itself is surprisingly private, tucked away from the street noise, and there’s something really satisfying about having your morning coffee out there before heading into town. The apartment feels properly lived-in rather than sterile, with thick stone walls that keep things cool even when it’s blazing outside (though let’s be honest, this is Cornwall – blazing is relative). What I really appreciated was the kitchen setup – it’s actually functional, not just for show. After a day tramping around the coastal path or getting windswept at Land’s End, being able to cook something simple instead of hunting for dinner reservations is brilliant.
Location-wise, you’re walking distance from everything that matters in Penzance, but far enough from the main drag that you won’t hear revelers stumbling back from the Admiral Benbow at midnight. The train station’s close enough if you’re planning day trips to St. Ives or further up the line, and honestly, the whole setup just works. It’s got that proper Cornish character – you know, granite and slate and views that make you understand why artists have been flocking here for centuries – without any of the tourist trap nonsense. The 4-star rating feels spot on; it’s not trying to be fancy, just comfortable and genuine, which is exactly what this part of the world does best.

Lovely hosts and lots of nice touches in the apartment when we got there like tea / coffee, biscuits for us ( and the dogs)! Not far to walk into town so great location with parking and enclosed garden was added bonus. Shower was great too
