Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first pulled up to this place on Delaware Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the address made it sound more corporate than cozy. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come when you’re not really looking for them. This Cornish cabin sits tucked away in the Tamar Valley like someone’s well-kept secret, and after spending a few days there, I kind of wanted to keep it to myself.
The thing about Gunnislake is that most people just drive through it on their way to somewhere else, which is honestly their loss. This cabin gives you the perfect excuse to actually stop and soak in what the Tamar Valley is all about. You’re right on the border between Cornwall and Devon here – I mean, you could literally walk to Devon in about ten minutes – and there’s something pretty magical about being in that in-between space. The cabin itself feels authentically Cornish without trying too hard, if that makes sense. None of that overly precious countryside aesthetic you sometimes get, just honest-to-goodness character with modern comforts that actually work. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward (no wrestling with narrow village streets), and the check-in was the kind of smooth experience that makes you think the owners actually care about getting the details right.
What really got me was how quiet it gets in the evenings – not dead quiet, but that perfect countryside quiet where you can hear the Tamar flowing and maybe some sheep doing their thing in the distance. During the day, you’re close enough to explore the old mining heritage around here (the valley’s absolutely riddled with fascinating industrial archaeology), but far enough from the main roads that you’re not dealing with tourist traffic. I spent one morning just walking along the old railway paths – there’s this network of trails that locals use but somehow never make it into the guidebooks. The cabin’s positioned so you can actually see some of the old mine workings if you know where to look, which adds this whole layer of history to your morning coffee. And speaking of coffee, the kitchen setup is one of those rare cases where someone clearly thought about how people actually cook and eat, not just how a kitchen should look in photos. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything you need is exactly where you’d expect it to be. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there – it’s that combination of getting all the basics absolutely right while giving you something genuinely special to remember.

I had such a lovely stay at this charming little annex—it was the perfect surprise weekend from my husband! The place was clean and beautifully kept and had everything we needed for a relaxing long weekend. The owner was absolutely lovely and even left us a delicious cream tea on arrival, which was a thoughtful touch.
One of my favorite things was the little fireplace — it made the evenings so cosy and peaceful. The location was great, too, just a short drive from both Cotehele and Tavistock, so it’s ideal for exploring the area.
What could be improved: The only thing to be mindful of is the driveway — it's a bit tight when parking, especially with a larger car.Anne from United Kingdom – 6 April 2025 (9/10)
Location, peaceful, friendly communicative hosts.
What could be improved: The entrance onto the property was a tight squeeze as we drive a van.
More cutlery (esp. teaspoons) and crockery needed to avoid running the dishwasher half full.
Microwave would be handy!Falk from Germany – 1 April 2025 (9/10)

The hosts were so kind, made us feel so welcome. Its in such a lovely location, stunning views from the kitchen area. Some little treats left by the hosts (scones, fresh milk, jam and cream) Easy to access local shops (20 minute drive to Lidl, Morrisons and tesco) theres a petrol station nearby if needed so that definitely helped 🙂
What could be improved: Personally i prefer a softer bed and the bed was quite firm but I still slept well given how peaceful it wasBickley from United Kingdom – 10 February 2025 (10/10)

Everything you could need for the perfect stay!
What could be improved: Owner came out to the road, so it wasn’t a problem, however it was a little hard to find in the dark.
