You know what struck me first about 6 Ocean Heights? It’s tucked away just enough that you feel like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t figured out yet. I mean, you’re still in Newquay proper – maybe a three-minute walk to the main shops along Bank Street – but there’s this sense of being slightly removed from all the chaos that happens down by the harbor during peak season.

The building itself has that classic Cornish seaside vibe without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Four stars feels about right here – it’s polished and well-maintained without being stuffy about it. What really got me was the attention to small details that actually matter when you’re traveling. The shower pressure is properly strong (honestly, this shouldn’t be noteworthy in 2024, but here we are), and someone clearly thought about the lighting because you can actually see what you’re doing when you’re getting ready in the morning. The rooms have this lovely mix of contemporary comfort with just enough local character that you remember you’re in Cornwall, not some generic hotel chain.

Here’s the thing about the location that the booking sites don’t really capture – you’re close enough to Fistral Beach that you can hear the surf on windy nights, which is either incredibly soothing or mildly annoying depending on your perspective. I loved it, but my travel companion needed the window closed after the second night. The walk down to the beach takes maybe seven or eight minutes if you’re not rushing, and you’ll pass that little bakery on Cliff Road that does proper Cornish pasties (get there before 11 AM or they sell out). What’s brilliant is that you can easily escape the beach crowds by heading the other direction toward the Gannel – there are some gorgeous walking paths that way that feel like secret Cornwall, especially early morning or late afternoon. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle during summer months, but the staff actually know the area well enough to give you useful advice about where to find spots, rather than just shrugging and wishing you luck. The whole experience feels like staying somewhere run by people who genuinely care about the place, rather than just managing a property from afar.

  What could be improved: Only negative we had was more to do with arriving in Newquay from a flight at approximately 11am and not able to check in until 4pm.
  This meant we all were carrying baggage around until then.
  Would have been great if we could have dropped bags off some way.

  What could be improved: I tried at least 12 times to contact booking.com by message as they only had us in for 2 adults and there were 4 of us . No one got back to me . We had to phone the lady who owned the house as there weren't enough towels for us to get showers and explained we tried a contact booking.com to sort and got nowhere. She was very helpful and sorted the problem out on Monday.
